Richmond Men Host GW Friday, Ask For Support to Save Program
RICHMOND, VA – (Wednesday, October 3, 2012) – The University of Richmond men’s soccer team will play host to George Washington University this Friday, October 5 at Robins Stadium, on the campus of the University ofRichmond. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and all members of the media are invited to attend.
Players from the University of Richmond men’s soccer and track teams were notified late last week that their sports teams have been dropped by the University to make room for men's lacrosse. This, despite the fact that the men's soccer and track team members represent so much of what is right about college athletics: passion, perseverance, academic and athletic excellence.
The University of Richmond alumni, students, faculty members, and broader Richmond community have rallied and are committed to getting the soccer and track teams reinstated. They are encouraging community members to attend this Friday’s home game to show support of the program.

Virginia men destroy Richmond 7-1
The University of Virginia left no doubt who the number one mens team in the state is on Monday night.
The No. 11 Virginia men's soccer team scored four goals in a nine-minute span in the first half to break open a scoreless match and roll to a 7-1 win over Richmond Monday evening in front of 1,786 spectators in the home opener at Klöckner Stadium. UVa also scored three goals in a 12-minute period of the second half.
"We played well tonight and were probably a little wounded after our last game (against West Virginia)," Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. "Give Richmond and coach Clint Peay credit. They played very hard."
Will Bates scored a pair of goals and dished out two assists for Virginia (1-1-0) as he tied a career high with his six-point effort. UVa received goals from six others in rolling to the win.
True freshman Spencer LaCivita earned his first career win in goal after stopping four shots. Richmond goalkeeper Thomas Hand made eight saves. LaCivita was one of five UVa freshmen in the starting lineup and one of 11 who saw 10 or minutes of action Monday.
Virginia held a dominating 28-8 edge in shots, including a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams attempted five corner kicks.
The teams played 27 scoreless minutes before the Cavaliers broke loose for four goals in a wild nine-minute span. Brian Span started the scoring after a great cross into the box from Bates and finished by ripping it past Hand. Just over four minutes later, Ari Dimas cranked from 25 yards out and perfectly placed it in the far left corner to push the lead to 2-0.
UVa scored 53 seconds later, as Bates lofted a cross across the box to freshman Chris Somerville, who powered home his shot from six yards out for his first career goal. Richmond (0-1-0) answered just 43 seconds later as Timmy Albright headed in a corner kick from Spencer Schiff, but UVa quickly quashed the UR momentum with another goal just over two minutes later. After Bates was pulled down in the box in the 36th minute, he was awarded a penalty kick and calmly finished it to push the UVa lead to 4-1.
UVa went 20 minutes without a goal in the second half before scoring three times in just under 12 minutes. After a great lead pass from Dimas, Bates broke away and dribbled around the goalkeeper before tapping in his second goal of the evening in the 66th minute. After a host of substitutions, the Cavalier reserves got into the act as freshman Kyle McCord, on his first career shot, slipped a goal just inside the right post off an assist from fellow rookie Calvin Rezende.
UVa concluded its scoring onslaught in the 78th minute when McCord crossed to Felipe Libreros, who touched it past Hand for the goal.
Virginia will compete in the Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational this weekend in Blacksburg. UVa will battle Cincinnati at 5 p.m. Friday before matching up with Wisconsin at noon Sunday.

Ultimate Cup Unveiled by Richmond Kickers, Chesterfield United
Locacl USL Soccer club Richmond Kickers are teaming up with Chesterfield United to bring a new tournament to the area. The Kickers and Chesterfield United are pleased to announce the Ultimate Cup, a new youth soccer tournament created by the merger of the Chesterfield United Icebreaker and the Kickers Invitational. The Ultimate Cup tournament will feature a Girls and a Boys weekend, scheduled to launch February 24-26, 2012 and March 2-4, 2012, respectively. "It has been a pleasure working alongside Chesterfield United on this unprecedented partnership opportunity,” commented Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer. “The Icebreaker and Invitational have proven successful and popular tournaments in their own right and we look forward to building on the strengths of both events to develop a truly unique tournament experience for the participating teams.”
“We are also pleased that by merging the two tournament weekends it will allow all Chesterfield County based teams the opportunity to participate, as well as the ability to create a significant economic boost to the region," continued Cowlishaw.
"This is a great opportunity for both clubs to share resources, provide a better environment for the boys and girls teams coming down for each weekend, as well as the potential to make a greater impact economically for the County of Chesterfield, which is why this whole idea was put into place," added Pat McStay, Chesterfield United Director of Operations.
With divisions for all levels of play from Classic to Elite, the Ultimate Cup will host games Friday through Sunday and features top-class facilities with access to some of the nation’s best natural grass playing surfaces as well as numerous synthetic turf fields, including the state-of-the-art home of the Richmond Kickers, Ukrop Park, the beautiful 80-acre Hensley Park, Point of Rocks, SportsQuest, United Training Center, Bryan Park, Warhill Park and Chesterfield County's forthcoming Stratton Park. All of the tournament’s top bracket games will be played on natural grass surfaces, with synthetic turf field back-ups in case of adverse weather.
The joint venture between Chesterfield United and Richmond Kickers will provide an extensive economic boost to the region, with 100% participation from Chesterfield County clubs, teams and players. FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Fredericksburg Area Soccer Association, which recently unveiled the addition of franchises in both the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League and W-League, is very pleased to announce Jen Woodie as the Head Coach for the Impact W-League team.
Coach Woodie is currently in her fourth year as an Assistant Coach with the University of Richmond Women's Soccer team. She was a four year starter for the VCU Rams where she served as one of the Rams' most valuable members of the backline and one of the CAA's best central defenders, earning numerous accolades throughout her career. "I am honored to have the opportunity to coach for the new W-League team coming to FASA. This league has been a passion of mine ever since I started playing in it during my collegiate career, and I believe in the mission and exposure it brings to women's soccer."
As a senior at VCU, Woodie was an All-CAA First Team selection, named the VCU Eurosport Invitational MVP, and selected to both the William & Mary Invitational and the Oregon State/Nike Invitational All-Tournament Teams and NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Third Team after anchoring the VCU defense. She also earned CAA All-Tournament honors her junior and senior year, was the Most Outstanding Performer her junior year and was named a CAA Scholar Athlete as a freshman.
Pete Cinalli, who is the FASA General Manager / Director of Coaching and will serve as Woodie’s Assistant Coach on the W-League team added, “we are extremely excited and fortunate to have Coach Woodie join our coaching staff. She was an elite player at the highest level and has direct experience both playing and coaching in the W-League.”
In addition to her numerous college accolades, Coach Woodie was an All-Cardinal District, All-Region and Virginia Group AAA All-State First Team honoree each of her final three years at Woodbridge High School and was chosen First Team All-Met by The Washington Post and the All-Area Player of the Year her senior year. She also helped her Prince William Sparklers Club team to the 2000 NSCAA Division I National Championship.
"I am very encouraged about this program and the business plan that is in place.” Coach Woodie added “The community has shown that they are excited about the W-League coming to town, I can only imagine what the atmosphere at games will be like."
In addition to being the W League Assistant Coach, Cinalli will continue to be the head coach of the Impact Super 20’s team, which is for College Players 20 & under as well as High School players that plan to play in college. These players will have the opportunity to one day advance to the W-League team.
