Groundbreaking Date Set for Virginia Cavalry FC Ballpark

Dulles, VA – May 29, 2013 – VIP Sports & Entertainment, owner and operator of Loudoun Hounds Professional Baseball Club, Virginia Cavalry FC as well as the Ashburn-based ballpark in which they will play, continues its aggressive strategy to bring affordable family entertainment to Northern Virginia in 2014. Building on last month's approval by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, VIP S&E is now prepared to make multiple significant announcements regarding the organization.
The sports and entertainment firm has set the Official Groundbreaking Ceremony for Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at the construction site on the immediate southwest corner of the Route 7 and Loudoun County Parkway interchange. The invitation-only groundbreaking will signify the official start of the ballpark's construction and the culmination of an 11-year journey to bring professional sports and entertainment to Loudoun County.

"This is a long-overdue moment in the history of VIP Sports & Entertainment and beginning construction on the Ballpark at One Loudoun is another major milestone for the organization," said Bob Farren, founding President and CEO of VIP S&E. "We are now within sight of the finish line: Opening Day in 2014. I am thankful to our many wonderful business partners, our civic leaders and most importantly our legions of excited fans for making this sports landmark a reality in Loudoun."
Building on the growing anticipation for professional baseball coming in 2014, the second Hounds FanFest, presented by Edelman Financial Services, Ted Britt Ford, Belfort Furniture and Toll Brothers, will be held July 21, 2013, at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn.  Extensive planning for this year's expanded event is already underway and will be the follow-up extravaganza to Hounds Inaugural FanFest, which attracted nearly 10,000 spectators.

More information on these announcements is available via the Hounds' and Cavalry FC's websites at LoudounHounds.com and VirginiaCavalry.com.  The sports franchises maintain a very active social media presence at its various sites Facebook.com/HoundsBaseball, Twitter.com/LoudounHounds, Facebook.com/VirginiaCavalry, Twitter.com/CavalryFC among other outlets.

Great Falls Soccer Club Everton U12 Boys win Dynamo Capital Cup

On Memorial Day weekend, the Great Falls Soccer Club (GFSC) Everton (U12 Boys) competed in the Dynamo Capital Cup in Richmond, Virginia, and brought home the Championship trophy.  What made this championship even sweeter was winning the U12 11 versus 11 bracket.  This was the first time the Everton has competed in a 11v11 tournament (usually reserved for U13 and above).

Everton went undefeated with three wins and no losses and outscored their opponents by a combined 15 goals for and 0 goals against!  In game one, they played SASA Revolution (from Stafford, VA), winning 7-0.  Next up was the tournament host, Dynamo Navy.  Despite a valiant effort, Dynamo was unable to stop Everton’s offensive attack and lost 7-0.  With this impressive win, Everton found themselves in the championship game against SYA Cardinals (of the VCCL), who were also undefeated and had beat their previous two opponents by a combined scored of 14-1.

The championship game was exactly what everyone expected…a low-scoring, back-and-forth possession game.  Both teams took numerous shots on goal, only to be thwarted by the goalies and the goal posts.  In the final minutes of the first half, Everton was fortunate enough to receive and score a penalty kick (PK).  Heading into the half with a slim 1-0 lead, while not ideal, was all that was needed to finally win the game.  The second half went scoreless, and the exhausted Everton walked off the pitch as Champions!

Congratulations to the Everton players and Coach Craig Scott!

For interested players, Everton will be holding U13 tryouts for the 2013-2014 season on the following dates: June 5, 11, 13.  Please contact the team manager, Luis Robles, at lu.robles@verizon.net if you are interested in trying out for the Everton.

Kickers to face MLS Affiliate D.C. United in U.S. Open Cup 3rd Round

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Kickers claimed a 4-1 win over Icon FC in the Second Round of the U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night, en route to the Third Round where they will face the club’s MLS affiliate D.C. United on Tuesday, May 28.  After conceding a 9th minute Argjent Duka goal, the Kickers rallied behind a Joseph Ngwenya penalty kick and a pair of Stanley Nyazamba tallies to oust their USASA opponent from tournament action.  Kickoff for the U.S. Open Cup Third Round match-up is set for 7:00 p.m. at City Stadium and tickets are on sale now for $15, youth and adult, at RichmondKickers.com.

Searching for their second upset in as many weeks, Icon grabbed an early lead, capitalizing on their first chance of the night when defender Kevin Garcia eluded defenders on the left wing and fed the ball into Duka’s path.  Duka dummied the ball as Nelson Becerra played him in behind the defense as Kickers goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra came off his line to challenge the charging forward.  He beat his last mark and slotted the ball through to the far right corner inside the first 10 minutes of the opening whistle.

Kickers settle for draw against LA Blues

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Kickers extended their unbeaten streak, battling the Los Angeles Blues to a 1-1 draw Saturday night.  In a tale-of-two halves, the Kickers held a first half advantage on an early Joseph Ngwenya tally until Blues midfielder Juan Perez buried an 88th minute equalizer to steal a point at City Stadium.

Following several ill-fated attempts on both sides of the field, the Kickers nearly broke through in the 34th minute when midfielder Luke Vercollone stole the ball in the midfield and fed it to Ngwenya.  The Zimbabwean international swiftly maneuvered past his mark and played a square ball across the top of the box to an awaiting Michael Seaton.  The 17-year old forward’s low shot was blocked by a staunch Blues defense but Nate Robinson attempted to scoop up the rebound near the endline, only to see his shot from a difficult angle cleared off the line.

The Kickers attack could not be stifled three minutes later when Robinson struck a low driven ball through traffic from the top of the 18.  The Blues defense once again redirected the ball from harm’s way, but this time the ricochet found a well-positioned Ngwenya.  Taking two steps around his defender, he lofted the ball over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Steve Gonzalez and into the back of the net.

Washington Spirit held scoreless in 0-2 loss to Portland Thorns FC

Washington Spirit
PORTLAND, Or.  (May 19, 2013) -- The Washington Spirit ended their first west coast road trip Sunday afternoon falling 2-0 to league-leaders Portland Thorns FC in front of 12,474 fans at JELD-WEN Field in downtown Portland.

Goals by the dynamic tandem of Christine Sinclair and Alex Morgan came in the final five minutes of each half respectively after the teams played end-to-end action for the duration.

Despite hefty doses of possession for the Spirit through the midfield, the visitors failed to seriously threaten Thorns goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc, but did keep her and the Thorns defense honest throughout.

Impact Travel to N.Y. for Weekend Roadtrip

FREDERICKSBURG LOOKING TO NOTCH FIRST WINS WHILE IN NEW YORK

The Fredericksburg Impact will complete a three-game road trip to start its W-League season this weekend when they travel to New York to take on the Long Island Rough Riders on Saturday and the New York Magic on Sunday.

photo: Courtesy of Kari Blosser
Fredericksburg opened the season last Saturday in Virginia Beach, falling 2-1 to the Piranhas. Kara Blosser got on the end of a corner kick by Kimmy Cummings early in the contest, before the hosts rallied for the win. Blosser, a central midfielder, was name to the W-League Team of the Week for her efforts.

The Impact started a young team in the match, with high school junior Halle Parker playing the entire game at sweeper against Virginia Beach’s high octane offense. Fellow high school teammate Sydney Wallace, a sophomore, also saw action late in the match as Fredericksburg searched for a game-tying score.

Fredericksburg created many chances throughout the game, but were unable to put them away, which is something coach Rich Stoneman said the team will need to improve on going forward.

“I think our conference in the W-League is probably the hardest, and our girls got a taste what they did, can and will be able to do moving forward,” he said. “I think they are hungry to be able to travel this weekend and put together a full 90 minutes [in both games].”

Hat Trick earns Ngwenya Player of the Week honor

TAMPA, Fla. – USL PRO named its Team of the Week for Week Eight of the season on Tuesday, with the Richmond Kickers’ Joseph Ngwenya earning Player of the Week honors after recording a hat trick in the Kickers’ 4-1 victory against Antigua Barracuda FC on Saturday night. The victory allowed the Kickers to remain undefeated this season, while giving Ngwenya five goals.

Ngwenya teamed with fellow Team of the Week selection Nate Robinson on a pair of goals, including the Kickers’ opener in the 18th minute. Robinson, who had three assists, found space down the left before sending a low ball across the top of the six-yard box that Ngwenya met at the far post.

Five minutes later Ngwenya added a second, heading home a finish after Brian Ownby kept an attack alive with a looping overhead cross that found the midfielder near the right post. Ngwenya then completed his hat trick in the 44th minute, finishing a free kick by Robinson to give his side a 3-1 halftime lead.

Review:: Goalrilla GAMEMAKER

Recently Goalrilla sent us their GAMEMAKERportable soccer goal which we happily tested and here is our review.

We tested the 5X8 model of the GAMEMAKER portable goal which will be available July, 2013.

Goalrilla Gamemaker

The description from their website describes the goal as:

The 5x8 GAMEMAKER goal is an excellent starter goal with a variety of uses: a match play goal for the U5’s & U6’s, a training goal for the U9’s to U11’s and a backyard practice goal for players of all ages and abilities. Don’t be fooled by the conventional goal appearance and playability, this goal is transportable and the soft flexible PVC tubing makes it safe during play as well.

Surprisingly compact, the goal arrived in an easy to transport and light weight bag which allows coaches, players, and parents the ability to take the goal with them to practice, a friends house, or even to the beach.

The goal is designed with an inflatable frame which I initially imagined would take a while to "pump up". Anyone who has ever had to inflate a backyard swimming pool knows how time consuming inflating something large can be. This was not the case with the GAMEMAKER because the pump that is included is extremely light wight and effective. The goal was set-up and ready for action in less than 5 minutes!

On to the action, my test subjects where both my children and neighborhood kids as well as a test with my u10 girls team. On grass the goal is easy to secure given the hooks included however since my girls team practices on turf, hooks are not an option. The directions suggested the use of small sand bags to secure the goal but we did not have any available. So we pressed on.

The results from the backyard session with the kids from the neighborhood where great. The children where impressed with the look and size of the goal and the GAMEMAKER easily handled any and all punishment handed out by the kids. Our backyard already contained a trampoline and swing set and the addition of the 5X8 goal did not really take away much more of our play area which was a good thing.

During the practice session with the girls the goal was much more steady than anticipated even without sand bags and since the frame is constructed of an inflated PVC tubing there was little to no risk of injury should the players run into the goal during our drills. Again, the GAMEMAKER did an excellent job standing up to everything the girls could dish out and believe me they where doing there best to "test the limits" of the new practice goal.

Overall with the compact, light weight, portable design, along with the ease of set-up and durability of the GAMEMAKER - VA Soccer News and the kids that helped us test the goal all highly recommend this as a perfect option to add to your backyard collection or coaching tool box. Our only wish is that the goal where more easily secured when used on turf fields. A near perfect 9 our of 10.

Kickers 2-0 Hammerheads

WILMINGTON, NC – The Richmond Kickers claimed a 2-0 win in Wilmington Friday night during their first road trip of the season and the opening leg of a back-to-back weekend.  Veteran midfielder Luke Vercollone converted a second half penalty to give the visitors the lead before 17-year old forward Michael Seaton notched the decisive goal in stoppage time in his professional debut.

Wilmington saw the first good chance of the night when defender Uriah Bentick whipped in a cross from the left side of the box.  Midfielder Will Heaney tested Kickers goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra early when he won the ball in the air but his header whizzed just wide of the target.
