VCU Men's Soccer Posts Strong Showing in First Three Spring Matches

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University men’s soccer team kicked off its seven-game spring schedule Saturday, going 2-0-1 in matches against Atlantic Coast Conference foes Virginia and Maryland, as well as UMBC.

VCU played three, 45-minute periods at Sportsquest in Chesterfield, Va., beginning with a scoreless draw against the Cavaliers. The Rams then defeated UMBC, 2-1, and defending ACC champ Maryland, 1-0. Sophomores Joseph Haboush and Yoram Mwila each found the net against UMBC, while 2010 All-Colonial Athletic Association honoree Jason Johnson scored the game-winner against Maryland.

"I thought today was a decent first spring day for us,” said VCU Head Coach Dave Giffard. “We had some good periods of play in possession and worked pretty hard as a group. We have a long way to go in the next two months to grow the way we need to this spring, but our improvements over the last few weeks were an encouraging beginning."

In all, the Rams’ spring schedule features four 2010 NCAA Tournament teams in Maryland, Virginia, UMBC and West Virginia.

VCU faces the Richmond Kickers at Sports Backers Stadium on March 23 before traveling to Campbell on March 26. The Rams entertain Virginia Tech at home on April 2 and conclude the spring with an April 17th match at West Virginia.
