SharX partner with former Cosmos outfitters Admiral

Norfolk, Virginia – The Norfolk SharX have announce that Admiral, the Original British Football brand to American and England’s top teams, will be the official uniform supplier to the Sharx for the 2011-2012 Season. The SharX play in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), the highest level of indoor soccer in the world.

Admiral is the same brand that provided team wear in the 1970’s and 1980’s for the England football teams, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Southampton and Leeds in the English Premier League. Admiral was also the market leader in the United States on the shirts of the Los Angeles Aztecs, Tampa Bay Rowdies and Vancouver Whitecaps.  Players who have worn Admiral include soccer legends Pele, Beckenbauer and Cruyff while they played for the New York Cosmos.  Today the brand is also worn by the 2011 North American Soccer League (NASL) Champions Minnesota Stars with a number of additional NASL and USL clubs ready to announce that they are partnering with Admiral for next season.

“We’re delighted to be launching Admiral with our first MISL team, the Norfolk Sharx." says Paul Hamburger, President and CEO of Admiral Soccer. “Admiral is totally focused on supporting the needs of community soccer teams throughout the United States. We’re really looking forward to working with the Sharx players, fans and the local Norfolk community. The goal is to outfit all of the MISL in the original soccer jersey, and the Sharx is where it all begins,” says Hamburger.”

The Norfolk Sharx is a Major Indoor Soccer team playing their first season in the MISL.  SharX president and general manager, Marcie Laumann runs the one of the oldest sports franchise in the United Soccer Leagues with their W League and PDL teams – the Virginia Beach Piranhas.

“The Admiral kit speaks for itself,” said Laumann. “When we were looking at which kit brand we wanted to play in, I spoke with members of the team and our head coach Jon Hall he said he played in Admiral as a pro in the USL and thought the quality was great.”

Laumann was 2001 and 2007 United Soccer League’s W-League Executive of the Year and in 2004 was inducted into the USL’s Hall of Fame.

“What made the decision simple for us was Admiral’s focus on community soccer.  We wanted to work with people who understand our priorities and what’s important to us and Admiral just gets it,” said Laumann.

Admiral has been working with community soccer clubs across the United States and Canada for more than 20 years. A key component to the success of the brand has been the development of very strong partnerships with soccer clubs and key soccer specialists throughout North America. At the core of our business is the Admiral brand but we also offer the Sondico for goalkeepers, Patrick footwear and Select balls in Canada. Our focus is on delivering a quality product for players on the field.

“We believe that soccer in North America is a grass roots community sport, and as such we have set up our business to support local teams and communities,” said Hamburger. “We support a number of charities directly and through the clubs we partner with. We're delighted to offer our support to the Norfolk Sharx charitable foundation in recognition of the great work that they do for the American Diabetes Association and the Alzheimer’s Association.”

The Sharx will unveil their new Admiral kits to fans and media on Tuesday, November 8, at 2 p.m. at the Norfolk Downtown, Crowne Plaza, 700 Monticello Avenue. Their first game of the season is November 11 at 7 p.m. against Syracuse Silver Knights at the Norfolk Scope Arena. Admiral is available online at http://www.admiralsoccer.com/

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia men's soccer team entertains Boston College at 7 p.m. Saturday in a key ACC match at Klöckner Stadium. ESPN3 will be on hand to show a live webcast, while live statistics will be available at VirginiaSports.com.

Tickets are $9 for reserved seats, $7 for adult general admission and $5 for youth/student/senior citizen general admission. Fans can order tickets online at VirginiaSports.com and by phone through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office at 800-542-UVA1 (8821) or 434-924-UVA1 (8821). Tickets are also available at the gate beginning one hour prior to the start of play. Gates open one hour prior to the match. Free parking is available in the University Hall and John Paul Jones Arena lots.

The match will be critical for both teams as they enter the final week of the regular season. With two matches remaining Virginia (10-5-1, 3-2-1 ACC) is tied with Duke for fourth place in the conference with 10 points. Boston College (11-4-0, 3-3-0) is a point behind in sixth place. The top four teams in the final conference standings receive home-field advantage for the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament.

Virginia is ranked as high as 24th nationally by Soccer Times and also holds a No. 25 national ranking according to Soccer America. Boston College is ranked as high as 13th nationally by the NSCAA.
UVa notched its third straight shutout with a 2-0 victory over American Tuesday evening at Klöckner Stadium. Calvin Rezende (Fr., Davie, Fla.) and Brian Ownby (Sr., Glen Allen, Va.) each scored for the Cavaliers, who now have recorded five shutouts in their last seven matches.

UVa goalkeeper Spencer LaCivita (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.) made a pair of saves as he picked up his ACC-leading seventh shutout of the season.

Now 5-1-1 in its last seven games, UVa reached the 10-win plateau for the 31st straight season on Tuesday. The Cavaliers played their first game without leading scorer Will Bates (Jr., Chester, Va.), who suffered a season-ending knee injury last Friday against Virginia Tech.

Boston College has been off since downing Duke, 2-1 in overtime, last Friday. Kyle Bekker and Charlie Rugg (the reigning ACC Player of the Week) each have seven goals and five assists to lead BC with 19 points. BC has been especially tough early in games, outscoring its foes 12-5 in the first half.

This marks the ninth meeting in the Virginia-Boston College series, with UVa holding a 4-3-1 advantage. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in Newton, Mass., last year. Since BC's entrance into the ACC in 2005, the teams are 3-3-1 against one another. Seven of the eight meetings have been determined by one goal or a tie.

Virginia finishes the regular season at 7 p.m. Thursday at home against NC State. UVa will conduct senior night ceremonies prior to the match.

UVA Women beat Hurricanes 2-0; Brian with two goals

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) scored twice to lead the No. 5 Virginia women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over Miami in the regular season finale Thursday night at Klöckner Stadium. With the victory, the Cavaliers (13-3-2, 7-2-1 ACC) finish second in the ACC and will host Maryland in an ACC Quarterfinal game on Sunday.

“It was work for us for a while tonight and credit Miami for that,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “I thought we played well in the second half. We settled down and made better decisions. In the first half, we were in a little bit of a hurry. Once we calmed down, we took it to them in the second half and scored a couple of nice goals.”

The Cavaliers and Hurricanes (9-7-1, 3-6-1 ACC) played a scoreless first half, as the best opportunity came in the eighth minute when a Miami defender blocked a shot from Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.) that then hit off the outside of the post.

In the second half, the Cavaliers pressured the Hurricanes the entire time and broke through in the 80th minute. Julia Roberts (Frederick, Md.) sent in a free kick that Brian headed in to give Virginia the lead. Three minutes later, Brian corralled a ball in the midfield, dribbled to the top of the box and slotted home her eighth goal of the season.

It marked the fourth consecutive game with a goal for Brian, the longest such streak by a Cavalier since Meghan Lenczyk had a four-game streak in 2008. Brian has scored five of her eight goals of the season in the past four games.

Virginia outshot Miami 19-2 for the game, holding the Hurricanes without a shot over the final 55 minutes of play. The Cavaliers also had a 3-1 corner kick edge. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) didn’t need to make a save to record her 10th shutout of the season. It was Jones’ 43rd career shutout, which puts her one away from tying the NCAA career record, set by Erin Guthrie of Rutgers (2006-09).

The ACC Quarterfinal between the Cavaliers and Terrapins is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia won the regular season meeting between the teams 4-1 at Klöckner on Sept. 15.

NEW YORK (Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011) – With 16 goals, D.C. United forward Dwayne De Rosario has claimed the 2011 Budweiser Golden Boot, awarded to the League’s top goal scorer at the end of the regular season.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

De Rosario’s career-high goal tally tied him with San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski for the league lead this season.  As in FIFA competitions, MLS uses assists as the first tiebreaker to determine a single Budweiser Golden Boot winner, and De Rosario had 12 assists; Wondolowski had three. Wondolowski, the 2010 Golden Boot winner,  is the third player to have won the Golden Boot and then tie for the lead the following season.  He joins former MLS players Stern John (led in 1998 with 26; tied in 1999 with 18) and Carlos Ruiz (led in 2002 with 24; tied in 2003 with 15).

This year De Rosario became the first player in MLS history to score goals for three different teams over the course of a single season.  As a member of Toronto FC, De Rosario scored one goal in two games before being traded to New York where he contributed two goals in 13 games.

After joining D.C. United in a trade for Dax McCarty on June 27, De Rosario scored 13 goals and added seven assists in just 18 games. Among his 16 goals and 12 assists are two hat tricks (versus Toronto FC on August 6 and versus Real Salt Lake on September 24), three game-winning goals, and four game-winning assists.

De Rosario has scored 93 league goals in his 11 MLS seasons, seventh most on the all-time list.  NOTE: Details on the MLS Cup Playoffs schedule will be announced this evening  in a separate release from MLS Communications.

Top Goal Scorers in Each Season:

Ranked as high as 21st nationally by Soccer America, the Cavaliers (9-5-0, 3-2-0 ACC) are looking for key points in the ACC race. UVa currently is tied for fourth place in the ACC with Wake Forest (3-3-0) with nine points, although UVa has a game in hand on the Demon Deacons. UVa is a point behind North Carolina and Duke, but also has a game in hand on the Tar Heels. The top four teams in the final standings earn home-field advantage in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament.

The match Friday marks Virginia's final contest away from home in the 2011 regular season. UVa is 2-1 in true road games and 4-2 away from home in 2011. The Cavaliers have played twice at Thompson Field already this season, winning 1-0 over Cincinnati (Sept. 2) and 4-2 over Wisconsin (Sept. 4) to claim the Hokie Invitational championship.

Virginia stands 15th in the NCAA's first RPI report for 2011, which was released Tuesday. UVa is the highest-ranked five-loss team in the ratings. The Cavaliers get big points from their strength of schedule; UVa has played a very tough schedule, featuring No. 2 Maryland, No. 7 UNC, No. 12 Charlotte, No. 22 Wisconsin, No. 26 Duke and No. 35 West Virginia (RPI rankings).

UVa defeated Howard, 2-0, in Tuesday evening at home. Virginia out-shot the Bison, 30-2, as the Cavaliers spent virtually the entire match in the Howard third of the field. Hunter Jumper (Sr., Plano, Texas) and Will Bates (Jr., Chester, Va.) each scored for Virginia (9-5-0).

The Bison did not record a shot until the 73rd minute. UVa goalkeeper Spencer LaCivita (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.) did not face a shot on goal all evening and was credited with his fifth shutout.

Bates continues to lead the team with 14 goals. He ranks second in the ACC and third nationally in goals. Bates has the most goals in a year by a UVa player since Yannick Reyering tallied 14 in 2005 and the most points (32) since Reyering posted 32 in 2006.

Coming off a 1-0 win over Wright State Tuesday, Virginia Tech stands 4-9-1 this season, including a 1-4-0 mark in conference play. The Hokies' ACC win came on Sept. 10, a 1-0 double-overtime win over then-No. 1 North Carolina. Goalkeeper Kyle Renfro has made an ACC-high 74 saves this year. Virginia Tech ranks ninth in the ACC with 12 goals this year and has allowed 18 goals - fifth in the conference.

Virginia owns a 35-4-1 all-time record against Virginia Tech and has won 18 of the 20 meetings over the past 25 years. Virginia has won the last five contests; Tech's last win was in 2005 (2-1 in OT in Blacksburg).

UVa downed Tech 2-1 in OT last season in Charlottesville on a golden goal by Greg Monaco (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) in the 92nd minute.

Virginia begins a stretch of three straight home games to wrap up the regular season on Tuesday when American comes to Klöckner Stadium for a 7 p.m. game.

The Dukes boast an experienced duo offensively in senior Patrick Innes and junior Paul Wyatt. Innes leads JMU with 22 points and 10 goals scored, while Wyatt is second on the team with 11 points and five scores. Junior Christian McLaughlin has been a solid playmaker for the Dukes, leading the team with seven assists.

In goal, senior Justin Epperson has recorded six shutouts while posting a goals against average of 1.05.
The Series In the overall series between James Madison and W&M, the Dukes hold a 18-20-8 record over the Tribe dating back to the 1969 season. Last year, William and Mary went in to Harrisonburg ranked No. 14 in the country and came away with a 2-1 win over the Dukes. Alan Koger had a pair of goals in the victory to lead the Tribe.

Jumper, Bates lead Virginia Past Howard, 2-0

Having seen their rankings slip following a loss to Wake Forest the UVA men's team bounced back with a shutout against Howard.

Video Highlights - UVA 2-0 Howard

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia men's soccer team knocked off Howard, 2-0, in a dominating performance Tuesday evening at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia out-shot the Bison, 30-2, as the Cavaliers spent virtually the entire match in the Howard third of the field.

"We moved the ball well and had possession about 90 percent of the time," Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. "We created two one-on-one chances in the first half and both could have been goals. The key at halftime was not getting frustrated. We said to keep doing what we're doing and eventually it will take care of itself."

Hunter Jumper (Sr., Plano, Texas) and Will Bates (Jr., Chester, Va.) each scored for Virginia (9-5-0).

The Bison (2-9-2) did not record a shot until the 73rd minute. UVa goalkeeper Spencer LaCivita (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.) did not face a shot on goal all evening and was credited with his fifth shutout. Howard keeper Eric Hamilton made eight saves.

The teams played a scoreless first half, despite UVa recording 12 shots and putting five shots on goal. UVa's Ryan Zinkhan (Fr., Fredericksburg, Va.) was stopped from short range by Hamilton in the sixth minute, while Bates also was stuffed in a one-on-one opportunity by Hamilton in the 29th minute.

The Cavaliers finally struck in the 63rd minute when Jumper curled a free kick just inside the far upper 90 from about 25 yards out. It marked his first goal of the year and his fourth career score.

UVa added a second goal in the 71st minute. After Bates was fouled just inside the top of the Howard box, the Cavaliers were awarded a penalty kick. Bates converted on the kick for his 14th goal of the season.

Virginia returns to ACC play at 7 p.m. Friday when it travels to Virginia Tech.

UVA vs. Wake Forest | Video Highlights

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia men's soccer team will take on Howard at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville. Live statistics will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
Virginia is 8-5-0 this season following a tough 4-3 ACC loss at Wake Forest last Friday. Will Bates (Jr., Chester, Va.) recorded a hat trick and now has 13 goals this season - second in the ACC and fifth most in Division I soccer.

UVa fell behind 3-0 early in the second half before Bates scored two goals just 29 seconds apart to pull the Cavaliers back into the game. The Demon Deacons scored in the 87th minute, which proved key when Bates later tallied his third goal with just six seconds remaining.

With 13 goals this season, Will Bates has the most goals in a year by a UVa player since Yannick Reyering tallied 13 in 2007. With 30 points in 2011, Bates has the most points by a Cavalier since Reyering posted 32 in 2006.

Howard is 2-8-2 this season following a 2-0 loss at Adelphi on Saturday. The Bison defeated Virginia Tech, 2-1, in the season opener.

Virginia owns the series lead with a 2-1-0 advantage, dating back to 1988. The two sides last met in 2009, a 2-0 Virginia home win. Bates scored a goal and added an assist in the 2009 contest, while Tony Tchani also recorded a goal for the Cavaliers.

Virginia returns to ACC play at 7 p.m. Friday when it travels to Virginia Tech.

Mary Washington Men's Soccer Ties York, 0-0, in CAC Action

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team tied York College, 0-0, in a thriller at Spartan Stadium on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles move to 5-5-3 on the season, and 3-1-2 in league play.

The Spartans held a 15-12 edge in shots, and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. UMW freshman Tyler Back had four saves for the Eagles in registering the 110-minute shutout.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Hood College at 3:30 p.m. in another conference clash.

William & Mary Men's Soccer Shuts-Out VCU, 1-0

The Willam and Mary men's soccer team withstood a brutal flurry of shots in the second half to down VCU 1-0 in Richmond, and keep pace at the top of an ever-tightening Colonial Athletic Association race. The Tribe improves to 8-5 overall and 5-2 in the CAA, while the Rams fall to 8-6 and 3-3 in the league.

The Tribe got on top early in the match and held on from there thanks to stellar defensive play. Towards the beginning of the 17th minute, redshirt-junior Ben Anderson (Mechanicsville, Va.) took a corner kick ont he left side, and lofted the ball just far enough to reach the near post. That was all the opening sophomore John Ciampa (Arlington, Va.) would need, as he elevated over the defense and headed the ball into the back of the net for his second goal (and eventually, second game-winner) of the season. It was also Anderson's second assist of the fall.

With its nose in front, the burden fell to the Tribe defense to make the margin stand-up and the unit proved equal to the task. While VCU could manage only six shots in the first half, the Rams unloaded a staggering 12 attempts in the final 45 minutes as the host team grew increasingly more desperate for an equalizer. Senior goalkeeper Colin Smolinsky (Fredericksburg, Va.) was having none of it, making six saves to tally his seventh clean-sheet of the year. He now moves into a tie for seventh on the Tribe's single-season record book with seven shutouts, and needs just two more to tie the record held by Andrew McAdams and Adin Brown.

The win kept W&M tied for the CAA lead with 15 points and just five games left in the regular season race. The Tribe will put that lead to the test on Wednesday, hosting co-leader James Madison at 7 p.m. at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.

No. 21 Tribe Extends Win Streak to Eight with 1-0 Victory at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The No. 21-ranked William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team extended its winning streak to eight and its unbeaten streak to nine with a hard-fought, 1-0 win over Hofstra on the road on Friday night.  With the win, the Tribe improves its record to 12-1-2 overall and to a perfect 7-0 in CAA conference play.  With the loss, Hofstra falls to 6-7 on the year and to 2-5 in league action.

Junior Cortlyn Bristol scored the game-winning goal for the College, while goalkeeper Katherine Yount made five saves and recorded her league-leading ninth shutout to lead the Tribe.  Junior Erin Liberatore took a team-high four shots, getting one on target.

Playing on a wet, turf field, the Tribe and the Pride played to a scoreless first half, with neither team getting a great look on goal.  Most of the second half went the same way, before the College took advantage of a Hofstra misstep and put a score on the board.

With the ball in Hofstra's half, a Hofstra player fell down on the turf, losing possession to Bristol.  The junior made a run on goal from 30 yards out, juking right and then going left to beat her defender.  Bristol cracked a looping shot on goal from 23 yards out, beating the Hofstra goalie for the match's lone score.  Bristol's sixth goal of the season gave the College its winning margin of 1-0.
With the victory, William and Mary extended a pair of impressive streaks.  The Tribe has now won eight matches in a row, the longest such streak since W&M won nine consecutive in 2002.  The College also ran its unbeaten mark to nine matches, the longest stretch since the Green and Gold went unbeaten in 15 matches back in 2006.

The Tribe improved its CAA conference record to 7-0 on the year with the win over Hofstra, maintaining its spot atop the league standings.  W&M now sits an impressive eight points clear of second-place Northeastern, who the Tribe will play on Sunday.  The College's 7-0 start is the fourth such beginning to a CAA schedule in program history.  In all three previous occasions, the Tribe has earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament.

The No. 21 William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team will continue its road trip on Sunday, October 16, when the College will play the Northeastern Huskies.  Kickoff in Boston is scheduled for 1 p.m. with live stats and live video available at TribeAthletics.com.

Virginia Men's Soccer Rally Falls Short at Wake Forest, 4-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Despite a hat trick from Will Bates (Jr., Chester, Va.), the No. 18 Virginia men's soccer team saw its three-match win streak come to an end Friday as it dropped a 4-3 decision to Wake Forest at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

UVa (8-5-0, 3-2-0 ACC) fell behind 3-0 early in the second half before Bates scored two goals just 29 seconds apart to pull the Cavaliers back into the game. The Demon Deacons (6-5-2, 3-3-0) scored in the 87th minute, which proved key when Bates later tallied his third goal with just six seconds remaining.

Bates recorded his third career hat trick and his second game with three or more goals this year. He tallied four goals earlier this season against Radford. Bates now owns a career-high 13 goals this season.

Virginia took twice as many shots as Wake Forest, 16-8, and out-shot the Demon Deacons 12-4 in the second half. Six of UVa's shots were on goal, while Wake Forest put five on goal. UVa took five corner kicks to two for Wake.

UVa goalkeeper Spencer LaCivita (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.) made one save. Wake Forest keeper Michael Lisch allowed two goals and made a pair of saves in 87 minutes of action; Doug Ryan replaced him for three minutes and allowed a goal while also making a save.

After the defenses ruled for the first 30 minutes, Wake Forest (6-5-2, 3-3-0) drew first blood in the 32nd minute on a Danny Wenzel penalty kick.

The Demon Deacons then got a huge momentum boost heading into halftime when Ross Tomaselli found himself wide open following a Teddy Mullin chip into the box and scored just inside the near post with just four seconds remaining.

Wake added an insurance goal in the 52nd minute off a free kick when Sam Fink beat LaCivita from just outside the goal.

Virginia then made a game of it when Bates scored twice in a 29-second span. At the 66:55 mark Bates took a Hunter Jumper (Sr., Plano, Texas) corner kick and scored. After a Wake foul in the box at the 67:24 mark, Bates converted on the penalty kick to pull UVa within 3-2.

Wake put the game away in the 87th minute on a goal against the run of play as Andy Lubahn made a long run then hit a shot across the box to the far corner. The four goals surrendered by the UVa defense marks the most allowed by a Virginia side since Nov. 3, 2007 in a 4-1 loss at Maryland.

This goal proved to be key in the waning seconds as Felipe Libreros (Sr., Oldsmar, Fla.) sent a ball to Bates, who deflected it past Ryan with just six ticks remaining.

Virginia returns home next Tuesday (Oct. 18) to face Howard in a 7 p.m. clash.

VS

Comcast Sports Mid-Atlantic, Sun Sports, NESN and Fox Sports Prime Ticket all will show the contest live. Live statistics also will be available at VirginiaSports.com.

Ranked 23rd nationally by Soccer America, Virginia comes into the match with a 6-4-0 record, including a 2-1-0 mark in the ACC. Maryland is unbeaten at 11-0-1 and tops the ACC with a 3-0-0 record.
The match Friday pits two of the top offenses nationally. Maryland is ranked first nationally with 31 goals; UVa is tied for 18th with 20 scores. The match also features two of the top scorers nationally - UM's Casey Townsend, who is fourth nationally in goals, and UVa's Will Bates, who is fifth.

The Cavaliers are coming off their best performance of the year, a dominating 2-0 win at Clemson last Friday. Virginia limited Clemson to just two shots while thoroughly controlling possession; UVa out-shot Clemson, 15-2. Brian Span scored a goal and added an assist, while Ryan Zinkhan nabbed the game-winning score - his first goal as a Cavalier.

Bates leads the team with nine goals this year, which ranks third in the ACC. He trails Duke's Andrew Wenger (12 goals) and Townsend (11). With three assists this year, Bates owns 21 points, which also ranks third in the ACC (Wenger, 28, and Townsend, 21). Bates is 11th in the ACC in assists.

The Cavaliers are 4-5-1 in their last 10 matches against Maryland.

Virginia returns home at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 11) when it entertains the Navy Midshipmen at Klöckner Stadium. UVa travels to Wake Forest next Friday (Oct. 14) in its next ACC action.

WPS Players helping First Lady promote Let's Move! campaing at White House

Last year D.C. United and Washington Freedom players helped raise awareness of the Let's Move campaign in Washington, D.C.

South Lawn Series Continues at White House | Oct. 13, 2010

The White House will be teaming up with professional soccer players again as Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) has announced six players will join First Lady Michelle Obama in hosting a Let's Move! clinic on Thursday, Oct. 6 on the South Lawn of the White House to teach kids soccer skills and highlight the importance of physical activity.

Check out the Live Stream below starting at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 6th.

Nicole Barnhart (Philadelphia Independence), Rachel Buehler (Boston Breakers), Lori Lindsey (Philadelphia Independence), Alex Morgan (Western New York Flash), Kelley O'Hara (Boston Breakers) and Becky Sauerbrunn (magicJack) will represent the U.S. Women's National Team on Thursday.  All six players taking part in the clinic were members of the U.S. Women's National Team that reached the final of the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany. Additionally all six players returned from the mid-summer tournament to help their clubs to appearances in the WPS Playoffs, where Morgan and the Flash captured the WPS Championship.

The WPS stars will lead local kids through a soccer clinic based on the principles of U.S. Soccer's coaching curriculum. The curriculum is designed to improve development of players in the U.S., concentrating on creating more organized, age-appropriate training sessions, developing coaching practices and creating a fun environment.

WPS has continuously supported the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative since its launch in Spring of 2010.  In addition to participating in multiple events hosted at the White House, WPS has also hosted a series of Get Active with Citi Soccer Kids clinics, delivering the Let's Move! message of the importance of physical activity to youth in WPS markets across the country through fun and engaging soccer clinics with WPS players and coaches.

United stumble down the stretch, now 'must win' vs Vancouver

On September 24th D.C. United had an impressive showing against a somewhat second team squad of Real Salt Lake but the result was exactly what United needed - 3 points.

The Black and Red seemed poised to make a strong playoff push down the stretch of the 2011 MLS season however the ensuing road trip saw United lose to Eastern Conference and I-95 rivals Philadelphia Union and Columbus Crew just three days later failing to collect a single point. Not the results the coaching staff, players, and fans had hoped for.

Now United find themselves two points out of the Wild Card Race and looking at a possible last chance to salvage any hopes of making the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Luckily for United they are set to face Vancouver (W-T-L-L-L) who they handled easily back in August in a 4-0 home win. Now D.C. United faces a must win situation and three points are the only acceptable result.

One negative note for the re-match against the Whitecaps is that MLS leading scorer and MVP candidate, Dwayne De Rosario will most likely miss the game due to national team duty. The absence of DeRo will simply be an opportunity for another United player to step-up (Davies, Najar?) and help salvage the teams hopes of a playoff birth.

Perry Kitchen, the rookie must not suffer the mental lapses we have seen from him throughout the season while having to help the United defense keep track of F Eric Hassli (10 goals).

Charlie Davies, the streaky attacker has 11 goals this season and must help fill the void if De Rosario is absent as expected. Vancouver has allowed 8 goals over their last 4 matches.

Vancouver =

Eric Hassli, the Frenchman has 10 goals this season but was essentially a non-factor in the previous match against United at RFK. He will be looking to exploit the inconsistent play of United's back line. Keep an eye on the 6'4" stiker on set pieces and crosses into the box.

Jay DeMerit, DeMerit is back to top form after having played the full 90 in his teams last six games. If DeRo does not play, the former USMNT defender and Whitecap captain will be looking to minimize the United attack and shut down Davies up the middle.
