CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia alumnae Lori Lindsey and Becky Sauerbrunn, members of the 2011 United States Women’s World Cup team, will be recognized during Thursday’s women’s soccer game against Virginia Tech. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium and will be televised nationally on FOX Soccer Channel.
Lindsey (Class of 2002) and Sauerbrunn (Class of 2007) will be honored during a halftime ceremony. They will also be taking part in a pregame autograph session for fans beginning at 6:15 p.m.
The pair of former Cavaliers helped the United States to a runner-up finish at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany. Lindsey has made 24 appearances for the national team since her international debut in 2005, including a start in midfield against Sweden in this year’s World Cup. Sauerbrunn has earned 14 caps for the United States since her debut in 2008, including starting in central defense in the World Cup semifinal win over France.
Lindsey was the 2000 and 2001 ACC Player of the Year at Virginia, earning All-American honors twice. Her 33 career goals still ranks in the top 10 in Cavalier history. She currently plays professionally in Women’s Professional Soccer for the Philadelphia Independence.
Sauerbrunn was a three-time All-American for the Cavaliers and the 2007 ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Her 8,523 career minutes played is a school record. She currently plays professionally in WPS for MagicJack.
Tickets are $7 for adult general admission and $5 for youth, senior and faculty/staff general admission. Fans will receive free Virginia women’s soccer T-Shirts, while supplies last.
