UVA's Morgan Brian named to USWNT roster for Mexico friendly at RFK

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) was one of the 18 players named to the United States Women’s National Team roster for a Sept. 3 friendly against Mexico at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. The game will start at 8 p.m., and air live on Fox Sports 1.  
 


Brian is one of two collegiate players selected to the roster, along with North Carolina’s Crystal Dunn. Former Virginia standout Becky Sauerburnn (Class of 2007) is also on the 18-player roster for the match.

Brian made her U.S. Women’s National Team debut earlier this year on June 15 in the United States’ 4-1 victory over South Korea in a friendly in Foxboro, Mass. She became the seventh Cavalier to earn a cap when she entered that match as a substitute and just the second active Virginia player to make a senior international appearance.

Virginia opens the 2013 season on Friday as it hosts the Klöckner Classic. The seventh-ranked Cavaliers’ season opener against VCU at 7:30 p.m. is the second game of a doubleheader. The first game features reigning NCAA Champion and preseason No. 1 North Carolina against No. 9 Santa Clara at 5 p.m.

Two members of the Virginia women’s soccer team were honored Wednesday (July 31) as TopDrawerSoccer.com announced its Preseason Best XI teams. Junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) was named to the first team and senior defender Annie Steinlage (Grand Haven, Mich.) was named to the third team.

FOXBORO, Mass. – Virginia rising junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) made her debut for the United States Women’s National Team in a 4-1 victory over South Korea Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. She became the seventh Virginia player to earn a cap with the full national team when she entered the game as a substitute in the 77th minute.

Brian is only the second Cavalier to make an appearance for the national team while still an active player for Virginia. In 1991, Amanda Cromwell earned her first cap before the start of her senior season.

Former Virginia defender Becky Sauerbrunn (Class of 2007) also played in Saturday’s game, playing the full 90 minutes as she made her 43rd appearance for the United States.

The United States Women’s National Team will return to action on Thursday, June 20, with another friendly against South Korea. That match will be played at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. and will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.

CHICAGO – Virginia junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) received her first call-up to the United States Women’s National Team as head coach Tom Sermanni announced a 23-player roster for two upcoming friendlies on Wednesday. Brian, a veteran of US youth national teams, is one of just two active college players named to the roster.

The United States will play a pair of games against South Korea over the next two weeks, on June 15 in Foxboro, Mass., and on June 20 in Harrison, N.J. Eighteen players from the 23-player training camp roster will dress for each game, and if selected, Brian could earn her first cap with the national team.

The roster also includes former Cavalier defender Becky Sauerbrunn, who currently plays professionally for FC Kansas City. Crystal Dunn of North Carolina was the only other collegiate player invited to the camp.

Brian had a strong sophomore season in 2012 after missing the first nine games of the year while starring for the United States squad that captured the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup championship in Japan. Upon her return she had four goals and seven assists, earning first-team All-ACC and NSCAA Southeast Region accolades. She had three goals and three assists in the ACC Tournament, leading the Cavaliers to the championship and earning ACC Tournament MVP honors.   

If Brian makes her debut against South Korea, she would be the seventh Virginia player to play for the full national team.

2012 All-ACC Women’s Soccer Teams Announced

Virginia’s Miller; North Carolina’s Dunn named players of the year;

Florida State’s Krikorian named coach of the year; Duke’s Pecht top freshman

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia senior Caroline Miller and North Carolina junior Crystal Dunn highlight the 2012 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Team, announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

Miller was selected as the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and Dunn was named the Defensive Player of the Year in a vote of the league’s 11 head coaches who were not allowed to vote for their own players. Duke’s Cassie Pecht received Freshman of the Year honors, while Florida State’s Mark Krikorian was voted the Coach of the Year.

Miller and Dunn were both named to the All-ACC first team, while Pecht was a second-team selection. Dunn is one of three three-time All-ACC first-team selections on this year’s list, while Miller is a two-time All-ACC First Team honoree. Wake Forest’s Katie Stengel and Boston College’s Kristen Mewis join Dunn as three-time All-ACC First Team selections.

Miller, a midfielder from Rockville, Md., is the second Virginia student-athlete to be named Offensive Player of the Year since the league split the player of the year award into offensive and defensive categories in 2004. She led the league with 23 points in ACC games on a conference-best 10 goals and three assists, while starting in all 10 games. For the season, Miller owns 32 points on 14 goals and four assists.

Dunn, a defender from Rockville Centre, N.Y., is the only player in ACC history to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors twice. After returning to Chapel Hill from helping the United States to the 2012 FIFA Under-20 World Cup gold medal, Dunn started the next 11 games and helped the Tar Heel defense to three shutouts, all in ACC action, and yield a 0.71 goals against average. While leading the defense, Dunn also integrated herself on offense and registered three assists. 

Duke’s Pecht established herself as one of the top rookies in the country in 2012. The midfielder from Mechanicsburg, Pa., has started in all 19 games and is tied for the league assists leader in overall games with 11 and posted the second-highest assists total in ACC games with five in 10 games. Pecht is third on Duke’s points list scoring five goals to go along with her 11 assists.

Florida State’s Krikorian guided the Seminoles to their first outright regular season ACC Championship, second overall, and first since 2009 with an 8-2-0 league mark. The eight ACC wins tie the most in program history. Florida State, which stands 16-2-0, started the season with a program-best 14 straight wins. The Seminoles were the consensus No. 1 team in the nation for six weeks and ranked No. 1 in at least one national poll three additional weeks for a school record nine straight weeks. Krikorian earned his 300^th career win, a 1-0 victory at Arkansas on Sept. 9. It is Krikorian’s third ACC Coach of the Year honor of his career. He also earned the honor in 2005 and 2009.

The 2012 ACC Women’s Soccer Championship continues on Friday, Nov. 2 with a pair of semifinal matches. No. 1 seed Florida State will play No. 5 seed Virginia in the first semifinal at 5 p.m., while No. 2 seed Maryland and No. 3 seed Wake Forest will meet in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN3.

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia sophomore midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) was named to the United States team that will compete at the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Brian is one of 21 players that will represent the U.S. at the event, which runs Aug. 19 to Sept. 8 in Japan.

In addition, two Cavaliers were named as alternates to the team. Sophomore defender Olivia Brannon (Troy, Mich.) and incoming first-year forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) were placed on the alternate list. The head coach of the U-20 team is Virginia head coach Steve Swanson.

The U.S. plays its first two Group D matches at the Hiroshima Big Arch Stadium in Hiroshima, Japan, opening its tournament on Aug. 20 against Ghana (4 p.m. local/3 a.m. ET) before facing China on Aug. 23 (7 p.m. local/6 a.m. ET). The USA will finish group play on Aug. 27 against Germany in what will be an extremely rare meeting during group play between former Under-20 world champions. The clash between the women’s soccer powers, which have both won this tournament twice, takes place at Miyagi Stadium in the town of Rifu near Sendai at 4 p.m. local/3 a.m. ET.

Cavaliers play 11 games at Klöckner Stadium

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team announced its 2012 schedule today, which includes 11 home games at Klöckner Stadium and 10 contests against 2011 NCAA Tournament teams.

"As always, we have a challenging schedule ahead which should give our fans plenty to be excited about this fall,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “The ACC has such a strong field of teams, so we know how competitive the conference will be, but we are equally excited about our non-conference games which include some perennial top teams. This year’s schedule also includes five in-state teams whom we have built up some great rivalries with over the years. Overall, we are confident this schedule will help bring out the best in what feel can be an exciting, highly entertaining and fun team to watch this fall at Klockner Stadium.”
Of the 10 NCAA Tournament teams on the schedule, eight reached at least the round of 16, including College Cup participants Duke, Florida State and Wake Forest.

Virginia will open the regular season with a four-game homestand, beginning with the season opener on Aug. 17 against Penn State. That is followed with games against Radford, Liberty and UNC-Wilmington. The Cavaliers’ lone non-conference road trip comes Aug. 31-Sept 2 when they travel to Austin for the Longhorn Invitational to meet host Texas along with SMU. Virginia returns home to host the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic Sept. 7-9 as it welcomes in-state foes George Mason and James Madison.

The ACC schedule opens with a pair of home matches against NC State (Sept. 13) and North Carolina (Sept. 16). The Cavaliers conclude September with visits to Clemson and Maryland before hosting NCAA runner-up Duke on Sept. 30. Virginia hosts Wake Forest on Oct. 5 before a three-game road trip to Miami, Florida State and Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers conclude the regular season on Oct. 25 by hosting Boston College.

The ACC Tournament will be played in the same format that debuted last season. It begins on Oct. 28 as the top four seeds host quarterfinal games. Those winners will travel to Cary, N.C., for the semifinals and final the following weekend at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The NCAA Tournament begins on Nov. 9 and runs through the College Cup in San Diego, Calif., on Nov. 30 and Dec. 2.

Prior to the season, the Cavaliers play a pair of exhibition games. They will play at Notre Dame on Aug. 10 before returning home to host Georgetown Aug. 12.

Virginia returns seven starters among 20 returning letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 17-5-2 and reached the NCAA quarterfinals. The Cavaliers return 90 percent of their goal scoring from 2011, including 10 of their top 11 scorers, headlined by All-Americans Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.) and Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.).

Brannon, Brian of UVA named to U-20 WNT Camp in San Diego

Two University of Virginia Women's soccer players have been named to the 30 player roster for the upcoming U.S. U-20 training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. Head coach Steve Swanson selected defender Olivia Brannon and midfielder Morgan Brian to join the camp set to run Jan. 5-19.

Brian, Schaffer, Smith 2011 Hermann Trophy Semifinalists

The 2011 Missouri Athletic Club announced this years Hermann Trophy Semifinalists on December 4th.

On the women's semifinalist list where University of Virginia Freshman Morgan Brian well as Mallory Schaffer, Midfielder from William & Mary.

Only one player made the men's list for a Virginia school - Junior Forward Yannick Smith of Old Dominion.

There has never been a women's winner from a Virginia school.

The University of Virginia has had five different past winners of the Hermann Trophy on the men's side: John Harkes (1987), Tony Meola (1989), Claudio Reyna (two-time winner 1992 & 93), Mike Fisher (1996), and Alecko Eskandarian (2002).

Virginia Freshman Morgan Brian Named ACC Freshman of the Year

Add another award the the list of accolades Morgan Brian's bio. The Virginia freshman and former Gatorade Player of the Year award winner has now been named ACC Freshman of the Year.






GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia women’s soccer first-year midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) was named ACC Freshman of the Year as conference officials announced the all-conference awards on Thursday. In addition, she was named first-team All-ACC, as was junior forward Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.). Brian also was one of three Cavaliers named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. 

Brian becomes the third Cavalier to be named ACC Freshman of the Year, along with Becky Sauerbrunn in 2003 and Jess Rostedt in 2005. She is the fourth Virginia first-year to be named first-team All-ACC, joining Megan Boehm and Angela Hucles in 1996, and Sinead Farrelly in 2007. Brian ranks second on the team in scoring this season, with eight goals and six assists for 22 points. Five of her goals and four of her assists came in ACC play, as did all three of her game-winning goals. 

Miller earned All-ACC honors for the first time in her career. She is tied for the conference lead with 14 goals and 32 points. Her 14 goals rank fifth on Virginia’s single-season goal scoring list, and she set a school record with seven goals in conference play. Miller leads the team with four game-winning goals, including two overtime golden goals. 

Brian was joined on the ACC All-Freshman Team by defender Olivia Brannon (Troy, Mich.) and midfielder Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.). Brannon has started all 19 games of her rookie season, ranking second among UVa field players with 1,733 minutes. Offensively, she has added two goals and one assist. Colaprico has appeared in all 19 games, starting three. She has three goals and two assists on the season.

The second-seeded Cavaliers will play sixth-seeded Florida State in the ACC semifinals on Friday night in Cary, N.C. Game time at WakeMed Soccer Park is 7:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast online by ESPN3.

UVA Women beat Hurricanes 2-0; Brian with two goals

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) scored twice to lead the No. 5 Virginia women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over Miami in the regular season finale Thursday night at Klöckner Stadium. With the victory, the Cavaliers (13-3-2, 7-2-1 ACC) finish second in the ACC and will host Maryland in an ACC Quarterfinal game on Sunday.



 
“It was work for us for a while tonight and credit Miami for that,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “I thought we played well in the second half. We settled down and made better decisions. In the first half, we were in a little bit of a hurry. Once we calmed down, we took it to them in the second half and scored a couple of nice goals.”

The Cavaliers and Hurricanes (9-7-1, 3-6-1 ACC) played a scoreless first half, as the best opportunity came in the eighth minute when a Miami defender blocked a shot from Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.) that then hit off the outside of the post.

In the second half, the Cavaliers pressured the Hurricanes the entire time and broke through in the 80th minute. Julia Roberts (Frederick, Md.) sent in a free kick that Brian headed in to give Virginia the lead. Three minutes later, Brian corralled a ball in the midfield, dribbled to the top of the box and slotted home her eighth goal of the season.

It marked the fourth consecutive game with a goal for Brian, the longest such streak by a Cavalier since Meghan Lenczyk had a four-game streak in 2008. Brian has scored five of her eight goals of the season in the past four games.

Virginia outshot Miami 19-2 for the game, holding the Hurricanes without a shot over the final 55 minutes of play. The Cavaliers also had a 3-1 corner kick edge. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) didn’t need to make a save to record her 10th shutout of the season. It was Jones’ 43rd career shutout, which puts her one away from tying the NCAA career record, set by Erin Guthrie of Rutgers (2006-09).

The ACC Quarterfinal between the Cavaliers and Terrapins is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia won the regular season meeting between the teams 4-1 at Klöckner on Sept. 15.

University of Virginia Midfielder Morgan Brian has been named to the roster for the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team training camp being held from Oct. 2-7.

Brian will be battling other top college and WPS players hoping to receive a call-up to the U.S. Women’s National Team camps ahead of Olympic Qualifying.

The October camp will run for six days and takes place at the Home Depot Center in Carson,CA.

Currently UVA is ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA National Preseason Rankings.

1. Why did you choose to attend UVA? How has preseason been so far?

UVA has everything I could ever want.  A beautiful campus, excellent academics, and an outstanding soccer program.  Preseason has been a great experience for our team, and has helped our team develop on and off the field.

2. Your resume of credentials is far too long to list. In your mind, which of these awards has been the most important for you to receive.
Any of the player of the year awards are the most important, but for me the Gatorade Athlete of the Year has been the most important one that I have received.  It is not only based on athletic ability, but it is also based on character and academic achievements.

3. You were awarded the Gatorade Athlete of the Year at the ESPYs. What were the ESPYs like? (Side note- how did you decide what to wear!)
The ESPYs was an amazing event to attend.  I enjoyed being surrounded by so many famous athletes that I have admired throughout my childhood years.   I shopped at numerous stores until I found the right dress the day before we left!

4. Cat Whitehill came to your school to present you with the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award. What was it like to have such an influential women’s soccer player at your high school? If you could have any athlete present you with an award who would it be and why?

I always watched Cat Whitehill play with the Women’s National Team, and I have admired her ever since.  When she came to my school, it was great to meet her and get to know her as a person.  I would have been honored by any athlete who presented me with the award.

5. You had a 3.8  GPA in high school. What an amazing feat with all of your soccer commitments. What was your favorite subject in high school and why? Do you have any idea of potential majors in at UVA?

My favorite subject in high school was Calculus because I love math, I loved my teacher, and I understand the subject well.  I am going to try to take a variety of classes offered here at UVA to explore my interests.  I love science and math.

6. Community service seems to be an important aspect of your life outside soccer. What has been your most memorable community service experience throughout high school?

My most memorable community service experience was last summer when my friends and I from the U-17 Women’s National Team traveled to Orlando to raise money for the Many Hearts, One Goal Foundation.  We spent a week in Orlando spending time with the Haitian girls whose homes had been destroyed by the earthquake in January 2010.

7. Who is your favorite player on the National Team right now and why?

Lauren Cheney and Megan Rapinoe are my favorite players on the National Team right now because they are technical players who have great vision and have a true soccer brain.

8. What is your advice for any younger girls playing the game? What are your favorite drills to do when you’re training alone?

My advice for any younger girls playing the game would be to believe in yourself and hard work does not take talent.  Growing up I have always been told to never let anyone tell you you can’t do something.  My favorite drills are technical ladders and dribbling through cones.

Virginia Women's Soccer lands a Winner

Not a bad way to start your colleg soccer career. And, a great sign of things to come for the University of Virginia Women's Soccer program.

Incoming Virginia women’s soccer player Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) was named the 2010-11 Gatorade National Female High School Athlete of the Year during a ceremony Tuesday at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles. She becomes the first soccer player (male or female) to receive the honor in the nine-year history of the Gatorade National High School Athlete of the Year award.



A 5-7 midfielder, Brian will be a freshman on the 2011 Cavalier soccer team. She has served as captain of the United States U-17 National Team and was named the 2011 National Girls Soccer Player of the Year by both Gatorade and Parade. Brian had 71 goals and 30 assists in 20 games during her senior season at Frederica Academy and finished her high school career with 186 goals and 95 assists.

Brian was presented the award by former Gatorade winners Lisa Leslie, Jessica Mendoza and Allyson Felix. In addition, she was recognized on Wednesday during the telecast of the ESPY Awards.

Brian received the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year Award on Wednesday morning, an honor that came with a surprise presentation from former U.S. Women's National Team player Cat Whitehill.

UVA lands nations #1 recruit, Morgan Brian

According to todays Our Game Magazine post, TopDrawerSoccer.com number one recruit, Ponte Vedra’s Morgan Brian, who has been called into the U-20 U.S. Women’s National Team camp twice this year, will go to the University of Virginia.

Joining Morgan Brian at the University of Virginia will be No. 4 Olivia Brannon (Michigan Jaguars FC) and No. 16 Danielle Colaprico (PDA).

No. 10 Whitney Church (Loudoun FC) committed to Penn State.
