Hokie Women lose in OT to Georgetown in NCAA Tournament

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss as it fell to Georgetown, 3-2, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Thompson Field Sunday evening. Sarah Adams scored the deciding goal to advance the Hoyas.

Tech wraps up the season with a No.25 ranking and a 13-6-1 record. The six losses for the Hokies were the fewest in a season in program history. Georgetown, ranking 14th in the nation, stays alive and moves to 16-3-3 on the year.

The Hoyas started the first half with an early goal to go up 1-0 three minutes into the game. Daphne Corboz sent a cross into the 18-yard box and Colleen Dinn connected on it about 10 yards out to the lower right corner.

Back-and-forth play continued for the next 30 minutes. Tech received its first chance to put a point on the board in the 27th minute with a Katie Yensen shot that went high. The Hokies took two shots and a corner before notching their first goal.

Kelsey Loupee took a free kick about 35 yards out and found Ashley Meier, who headed it into the far corner to tie the game at one with five minutes left in the half.

Georgetown responded with a shot by Marina Paul, but the midfielder sent it high. Tech got the ball back two minutes later and Anne Lumpkin fed a racing Jazmine Reeves down field who connected on a low shot to the opposite corner at the 43:34 mark.

The two teams went into the break with the Hokies up 2-1. The Hoyas out shot Tech 6-5, while the Hokies took the 2-1 corner advantage in the first. Tech's goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts stopped three Georgetown shots, while Emma Newins notched one save for the Hoyas in the first 45 minutes of play.

Both teams came out of the break trying to create opportunities. Georgetown took the first shot of the half three minutes in, but Colpitts was there to make the stop. The Hokies responded with two from Mayrose in the 50th minute, but both went wide.

At the 65:58 mark, Meier took the ball up field and gave Tech the next opportunity to increase its lead. The midfielder dished the ball to Mayrose who beat the defender and went one on one with the keeper and fired a hard shot but Newins was there to make the grab.

The Hoyas tied the score at two in the 78th minute. Mary Kroening fed the ball from the right sideline, close to the five-yard box and Kaitlin Brenn jumped up and headed it in over Colpitts' head.

The Hokies continued to attack, eager to find the next goal. Tech notched back-to-back corners with the last one coming in the final 20 seconds and Mayrose jumped up for a header but went wide right to end regulation.

The extra period started with a Tech corner kick but the ball was quickly cleared out by the Hoyas. Less than two minutes later Georgetown moved the ball down field and Jessica Clinton crossed it from the left side to Adams, who lifted the ball over Colpitts and into the back of the goal.

Georgetown outshot the Hokies just 10-9 in the game, but Tech took the 5-1 edge in corners. Colpitts finished the game with five saves, while Newins made two saves for the Hoyas.

No. 19 Virginia Tech Women Lose to Florida State, 1-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 19 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team fell to top-ranked Florida State, 1-0, Thursday night Florida State’s Soccer Complex. Hikaru Murakami’s first-half goal was the deciding factor as the Seminoles continue to be the only undefeated team in the nation (13-0-0) and 6-0-0 in the ACC. The Hokies fell to 11-4-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the conference.

“Tonight was a difficult game and I think Florida State is a very good team and there is a reason why they are the No. 1 team in the country right now,” commented head coach Chugger Adair. “It was a challenge for us tonight and it was an opportunity we were looking forward to. We didn’t do a good job defending in the first half. I think we gave up way too many corners and set pieces. We got ourselves backed up against a wall and unfortunately gave up the early goal.”

Florida State took control quickly and attacked early taking 11 shots in the first. The Hokies found just two opportunities, but Florida State’s goalkeeper Kelsey Wys was there to stop the one shot on goal taken by Shannon Mayrose 12 minutes in.

The Seminoles found the back of the net at the 26:18 mark when Murakami was fed the ball by Jamia Fields and fired one about 25 yards out. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced in past Dayle Colpitts in goal for the game-winner.

The first half closed out with the Seminoles having the 11-2 shot advantage and took eight corners, while Tech recorded one.

The Hokies jumped out in the second trying to make opportunities but the No. 1 defense in the nation held on to the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the game. Tech’s closest chance to tying the score at one was when Jazmine Reeves took a header in the box, but it just went over the crossbar at the 78:45 mark.

“The second half was much better. We tightened things up and were a lot more organized and gave up less. However, we didn’t create as much until the last few minutes. We tried to push the game and unfortunately the result went against us. But we are looking forward to a good hard fought match against Miami on Sunday.”

Time became a factor as the Hokies’ offense tried to make chances but just couldn’t find an opening. Tech’s defense played very solid limiting the Seminole offense to just four shots on goal.  

Colpitts took the loss and fell to 6-4-0, while stopping three shots. Wys improved to 12-0-0 with the win and recorded one stop for the Seminoles. Two Seminoles recorded a game-high four shots, while Mayrose, Anne Lumpkin and Reeves recorded shots for the Hokies.

Tech is back in action when it travels further south for a 1 p.m. matchup against Miami Sunday afternoon.

No. 15 Va Tech Women Defeat Sooners, 4-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 15 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team cruised past the Oklahoma Sooners, 4-1, Sunday evening at Thompson Field in its final non-conference match of the season. The Hokies conclude non-conference play with a 9-0-0 record this season which marks the first time Tech went undefeated outside of its conference. Ashley Meier, Katie Yensen, Jazmine Reeves and Ellie Zoepfl all found the back of the net for the Hokies.

Tech (10-3-0) opened the game up early, attacking hard and receiving the first corner kick of the game at the 1:28 mark. After Oklahoma (4-6-4) cleared the ball out of the box, the Hokies quickly got the ball back and fired the first shot of the game but the Jordan Coburn shot went high.

Just two minutes later, Tech put the first point on the board as Shannon Mayrose fed Meier the ball inside the 18-yard box and she connected about seven yards out at the 3:52 mark. This was the earliest goal in 21 games for the Hokies. The last time Tech scored this early was Oct. 13, 2011 when the Hokies beat Clemson, 3-0.

Tech took four shots and two corners before Jazmine Reeves fired a hard shot that the Sooner’s goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire couldn’t grab and Yensen flew in and found the back of the net to make it a 2-0 ball game at the 33:55 mark.

Oklahoma had two opportunities to put a point on the board before the half. Renae Cuellar and Amy Petrikin both fired a shot on goal but the Hokie goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts was there to make the stops.

The two teams went into the break with the Hokies holding the 9-2 shot advantage and took three corners.

The second half consisted of a lot of back-and-forth play, until Oklahoma briefly opened up taking a shot in the 78^thminute that the Hokie defense blocked. But Katharine Nutman rebounded and fired one past Colpitts for the goal at the 77:11 mark.

Tech responded with two of their own. After a corner and a Hokie shot, Morgan Conklin fed Reeves the ball inside the 18-yard box and Reeves chested the ball down and fired a hard one right past Devonshire to make it a 3-1 ball game.

With four minutes left in regulation, Anne Lumpkin got the ball around midfield and passed it to Zoepfl on the right sideline. Zoepfl took the ball up field and fired a hard shot to the upper far corner for the final goal of the game and the first of her career.

Tech closed the game out with the 17-6 shot advantage and took nine corners, while the Sooners only recorded two. Reeves led both teams with five shots and three on goal.

Colpitts (6-3-0) charted her sixth win of the season and stopped four shots, while Devonshire (4-6-4) took the loss and picked up five saves.  

The Hokies hit the road for the first time in four games as they travel to Florida for a tough ACC weekend. Tech will stop at top-ranked Florida State first on Thursday for an 8 p.m. match that will air on RSN, before heading further south to Miami Sunday.

USWNT Players Lindsey and Sauerbrunn to be Honored at Virginia Tech Game

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia alumnae Lori Lindsey and Becky Sauerbrunn, members of the 2011 United States Women’s World Cup team, will be recognized during Thursday’s women’s soccer game against Virginia Tech. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium and will be televised nationally on FOX Soccer Channel.

Lindsey (Class of 2002) and Sauerbrunn (Class of 2007) will be honored during a halftime ceremony. They will also be taking part in a pregame autograph session for fans beginning at 6:15 p.m.

The pair of former Cavaliers helped the United States to a runner-up finish at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany. Lindsey has made 24 appearances for the national team since her international debut in 2005, including a start in midfield against Sweden in this year’s World Cup. Sauerbrunn has earned 14 caps for the United States since her debut in 2008, including starting in central defense in the World Cup semifinal win over France.

Lindsey was the 2000 and 2001 ACC Player of the Year at Virginia, earning All-American honors twice. Her 33 career goals still ranks in the top 10 in Cavalier history. She currently plays professionally in Women’s Professional Soccer for the Philadelphia Independence.

Sauerbrunn was a three-time All-American for the Cavaliers and the 2007 ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Her 8,523 career minutes played is a school record. She currently plays professionally in WPS for MagicJack.

Tickets are $7 for adult general admission and $5 for youth, senior and faculty/staff general admission. Fans will receive free Virginia women’s soccer T-Shirts, while supplies last.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech athletics department and women’s soccer head coach Chugger Adair have announced the hiring of new assistant coach Pete Pososki. Pososki joins the Tech staff after spending the last six seasons as an assistant at the University of Pennsylvania.
