MONTOYA NAMES 21-PLAYER ROSTER FOR
2012 FIFA U-17 WOMEN'S WORLD CUP IN AZERBAIJAN

Talented Squad of '95 Birth Years Will Compete in Third FIFA U-17 WWC;
USA to Face France, Gambia and Korea DPR in Group Play

CHICAGO (Aug. 29, 2012) - U.S. Under-17 Women's National Team head coach Albertin Montoya has named the 21 players who will represent the United States at the 2012 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup being held in Azerbaijan from Sept. 22 through Oct. 13.

New To Under Armour - The Under Armour Revolutionary ARMOUR BRA

The U.S. opens the tournament against France on Sept. 22 at Lankaran Stadium in Lankaran at 1 p.m. local (4 a.m. ET) before traveling to the capital city of Baku, where the remaining two Group B matches will be played. The USA will continue first round action against Gambia at Dalga Arena on Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. local (8 a.m. ET) and finish group play on Sept. 29 against Korea DPR (5 p.m. local / 8 a.m. ET), the country that defeated the USA in the championship game of the inaugural U-17 Women's World Cup in 2008 in New Zealand. The USA-North Korea clash will take place at Bayil Stadium.

Montoya named the squad after a training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., from Aug. 19-26, at which the USA defeated the China U-17 Women's National Team in two friendly matches by 2-1 and 5-1 scores.

The U.S. U-17s have compiled an overall record of 22-5-6 over 2010 and 2011 heading into the Women's World Cup, including a 13-1-4 mark in international games. All 21 players on the roster were born in 1995, the year that the second-ever FIFA Women's World Cup was staged in Sweden.

Most of the 21 players named are relatively experienced at the U-17 level as the U.S. team has played 14 internationals this year prior to traveling to Azerbaijan. Forward Summer Green leads the way in both U-17 caps and goals with 21 and 17 respectively, but she is surrounded by some talented teammates.

The core of this U.S. team has risen through the ranks together in the U.S. youth national teams, starting at the U.S. Under-14 Identification Camp in 2009. In fact, 16 players on the Women's World Cup roster attended that U-14 I.D. Camp staged in Pomona, Calif. Most of these players were just 13 years old when the USA participated in the first FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in 2008.

The USA has a talented and diverse group of attacking players led by Green, who set a U.S. record for most goals scored in a CONCACAF qualifying tournament at any level when she amassed 12 in just five games to help the USA win the regional title in Guatemala and earn a berth to Azerbaijan. The USA features players with size, speed, strength and craftiness on the front line in Green, Emily Bruder, Margaret "Midge" Purce, Amber Munerlyn and Darian Jenkins. The combination of these players can give the USA various looks against different opponents. The U.S. has scored a combined 33 international goals at the U-17 level.
The USA also has depth in the midfield, which is anchored by team captain Morgan Andrews, whose sophisticated game belies her youth. Andrews is joined by several players with the ability to contribute on both sides of the ball. Morgan Stanton, Lauren Kaskie, Joanna Boyles, Andi Sullivan and Toni Payne have been effective players whether they are in the first 11 or coming off the bench, and all have shown the ability to impact the game striking on goal from midfield.

The U.S. defense, which did not allow a goal during qualifying, is led by center back and co-captain Maddie Bauer, a player who is smooth on the ball and gritty in the tackle. Her usual partner in the center defense is the physically dominating Mandy Freeman. Gabbi Miranda provides composure and a sweet left foot at left back while Brittany Basinger, a relatively late call-up during this cycle, is a thundering right back who can attack down the flank, as well. Adding depth to the defense will be Lizzy Raben, usually a center back, and Morgan Reid, usually a flank defender, as well as Claire Wagner, who made a late run to make the final roster.

In goal, the USA has one of the best in the world at her position in Jane Campbell. Athletic and tall at 5-foot-9, Campbell is a rare specimen at the U-17 level. She will be joined by two other talented and tall net-minders in the 6-foot Cassie Miller and the 5-foot-10 Morgan Stearns.
Additional Notes:
  • The USA will head into the Women's World Cup having compiled a record of 12-0-2 this year in international matches.
  • The two ties came against the England U-19s and the China U-20s.
  • The age cut-off date for this Women's World Cup is players born on or after Jan. 1, 1995. All of the players on the roster were born in 1995 with Darian Jenkins being the oldest with a Jan. 5 birthday.
  • The youngest player is Andi Sullivan, who has a Dec. 20 birthday.
  • Twenty of the 21 players are still in high school. The exception is Summer Green, who graduated a year early and is enrolled at the University of North Carolina.
  • Seventeen different youth clubs from 14 states are represented on the roster with the Chelsea Ladies out of North Carolina and the Colorado Rush leading the way with three players each.
  • At the U-17 level, each confederation (outside of the smallest Oceania) gets three berths to the World Cup tournament. Just nine countries return from the 2010 tournament and that does not include defending champion Korea Republic.
  • The USA will hold a pre-tournament training camp in Cyprus and will depart for Europe on Sept. 12.
  • The 16 nations competing in the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup are: host Azerbaijan; two additional teams from Europe in France and Germany; three Asian teams in Japan, Korea DPR and China PR; three from Africa in Nigeria, Ghana and Gambia; the USA, Canada and Mexico from CONCACAF; Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay from South America; and New Zealand from Oceania.

No. 7 UVA Women Shutout UNCW 2-0

Women’s Soccer Tops UNCW 2-0 For Third Straight Win
Cavaliers conclude homestand with a 3-1 record

CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 8 Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its season-opening homestand with a 2-0 victory over UNC Wilmington on Sunday in front of a season-high 1,129 fans at Klƶckner Stadium. Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) scored second half goals to lead the Cavaliers (3-1) past the Seahawks (0-2-1).

“It was a good team victory as we had a good effort all around,” said assistant coach Ron Raab. “We played some great soccer in the first half, but were not rewarded with a goal. We continued to pressure them in the second half and got a couple of good finishes by players who have been playing well for us all year long.”

The Cavaliers dominated the first half, outshooting the Seahawks 12-1, but couldn’t get one past UNCW goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter, who had eight first-half saves. One of Virginia’s best chances came in the 15th minute. Gloria Douglas (Fayetteville, N.C.) beat Hunter to a loose ball at the top of the box and tried to dribble around the keeper. The ball deflected wide to Kaili Torres (Fleming Island, Fla.), who placed a shot towards the vacated net that was saved off the line by a sliding defender.

Virginia finally broke through in the 56th minute to take the lead. Molly Menchel (Arlington, Va.) sent a cross into the box that Doniak controlled before pounding into the net for her fifth goal of the season. Colaprico doubled the lead in the 67th minute as she intercepted a clearance and fired a shot from the top of the box into the upper corner for her second goal of the season.

Doniak’s goal made her the first player in school history to score in each of the first four games of a season. Her goal was also the first career game-winning goal for the freshman.

“It has been really exciting,” said Doniak. “I wanted to come in and make an impact. I have been fortunate to do so, whether that has been scoring or just providing some energy on the field. I have been fortunate that my teammates have set up a lot of chances for me that I have been able to finish.”

Virginia outshot UNCW 27-3 in the contest and had a 7-2 corner kick edge. Churchill O’Connell (McLean, Va) made one save in net for the Cavaliers as she and Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.) combined for Virginia’s third consecutive shutout. Hunter finished with 13 saves in goal for the Seahawks.

The Cavaliers make their first road trip of the regular season next week as they head to Texas for the Longhorn Invitational. Virginia meets host Texas on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. CT) in a contest that will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network.

Kickers fall to Hammerheads in USLPRO Playoffs

RICHMOND, VA – (Saturday, August 25, 2012) – The Richmond Kickers were knocked out of the USLPRO playoffs Saturday night in a thrilling five-goal encounter with the visiting Wilmington Hammerheads.

Richmond dominated the early stages of the match, with Matthew DelicĆ¢te hitting the crossbar with his headed effort in the third minute. Wilmington’s starting goalkeeper Alex Horwath picked up a hamstring injury in the 7th minute, and backup keeper Troy Hernandez entered the game to earn his first minutes of the season. DelicĆ¢te earned a free kick just outside the box in the 11th minute, and Sascha Goerres provided the first test of the night for Hernandez with a curling strike around the wall. The Wilmington keeper got a hand to it, but it deflected straight to Jason Yeisley inside the six-yard box. The Richmond forward slotted his shot into the empty net to give the Kickers the early lead.

Wilmington came into the game following the goal and nearly scored with a dangerous free kick of their own in the 13th minute, but Ronnie Pascale was able to make the save. Yeisley nearly scored another goal for Richmond in the 28th minute, but his powerful header was cleared off the line by the Wilmington defense. Hagop Chirishian put a 35th minute Wilmington free kick on target, but Pascale was able to punch the shot over the bar to safety.

The Hammerheads started the second half brightly, with striker Andres Cuero testing Pascale from close range in the 47th minute, but the shot stopper was equal to the task. Edson Elcock replaced Stanley Nyazamba for the Kickers in the 54th minute, and the pacy forward nearly doubled Richmond’s lead with his 68th minute individual effort.

Wilmington countered quickly following the shot by Elcock. Substitute Steven Perry played a ball to Troy Cole at the penalty spot, and the midfielder blasted a low shot under the diving Pascale to tie the score at one apiece. Perry added a goal of his own three minutes later when Chirishian’s corner kick skipped through the crowd of players in front of the goal to the back post, where the midfielder tucked his shot into the bottom corner of the net.

The Kickers introduced Mike Burke, Nozomi Hiroyama and Christopher Agorsor after Wilmington took the 2-1 lead, and the substitutes made a positive impact in the final third for Richmond. Mike Burke curled a ball to the near post from a 79th minute corner kick, and fellow substitute Elcock snapped a header into the top corner to level the score again.

Wilmington pushed  forward in waves in the final ten minutes of the match and Richmond escaped going behind in the 89th minute when Hertzog turned his shot over the crossbar from close range. Richmond appeared to have escaped the onslaught when they cleared the ball in the final minute of stoppage time, but Wilmington defender Tom Parratt kept the ball in play along the touchline. Parratt swung in a deep cross from the right side that floated over the head of Pascale and nestled into the side netting on the far side to give the Hammerheads the 3-2 victory and a place in the semi-finals. The Hammerheads will face Orlando City next Friday, August 31 at 7:30 p.m.

Doniak Named TopDrawerSoccer.com Player of the Week
First-year Cavalier forward receives first national accolade

CHARLOTTESVILLE Virginia women’s soccer first-year forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) was named the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s College Player of the Week. Doniak received the national award after scoring three goals in wins over Liberty and UNC Wilmington last week.

Doniak scored twice in Virginia’s 3-0 win over Liberty on Wednesday and had the game-winning goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win over UNCW. She is the leading scorer in the ACC with five goals this season.

The first-year forward has come off the bench and scored in each game this year, becoming the first Cavalier to score in the first four games of a season. She has either scored or assisted on seven of Virginia’s 11 goals this year.

Doniak is the third Cavalier to receive the award, joining Caroline Miller (Sept. 1, 2009) and Meghan Lenczyk (Aug. 23, 2010).

The Cavaliers (3-1) make their first road trip of the regular season next week as they head to Austin for the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. Virginia meets host Texas on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. CT) in a contest that will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network.

Lancers beat Howard 1-0

LONGWOOD WINS ON THE ROAD AT HOWARD 1-0
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Longwood University took a 1-0 non-conference women’s soccer shutout victory on the road past Howard University of the Great West Conference Monday night in Washington, D.C.  Freshman Haylea Witz|Chesapeake (Grassfield) scored the game-winning goal unassisted in the 69th minute for the Lancers (3-1), who won their second-straight match, while senior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills. E. Godwin) posted the shutout.  Longwood will play again on Sunday afternoon, September 2, at Appalachian State University of the Southern Conference in Boone, North Carolina beginning at 12 p.m.

“It’s always hard to come here and get a result against Howard,” said 19th year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93.  “Their very well organized and very stubborn on defensive.  Offensively, we were dangerous and created chances, and all it takes is one and we got that.  Defensively, we’re on the road and we earned a shutout ... it’s always tough at Howard.”

Longwood and Howard battled scoreless through the first 45 minutes, and through about half of the second half before Witz collected a deflected shot on the far post and beat the keeper to the top left corner at 68:16.  The Lancers had missed on a penalty kick opportunity about five minutes earlier in the 64th minute after a player was dragged down in the box.

Longwood took a 17-6 advantage in shots, including 5-1 in attempts on goal, and the Lancers had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks too.  Junior Kelsey Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage) had seven shots, one on goal, and senior Nikki Glisson|Mechanicsville (Hanover) had her three shots, one on goal for Longwood.  Byron played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers with one save for her ninth career shutout.

Nia Walcott had two shots, one on goal, to lead Howard while Kyra Dickinson played the duration for the Bison with four saves.

Longwood and Howard were playing for the 13th time in the sport of women’s soccer, and the Lancers lead the series, 11-2.

LONGWOOD DEFEATS VISITING RICHMOND IN SECOND OVERTIME 2-1

FARMVILLE, Va. --
Longwood University took a 2-1 non-conference women’s soccer double-overtime home victory past the visiting University of Richmond from the Atlantic 10 Conference Friday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  Senior captain Lindsey Ottavio|Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) scored both goals unassisted for the Lancers (2-1), including the exciting game-winner just 50-seconds into the second extra period.  Ottavio scored her first goal in the 65th minute after the hosts and Spiders (0-3) were scoreless at the intermission.  Longwood will play again on Monday night, August 27, at Howard University of the Great West Conference in Washington, D.C. beginning at 7 p.m.

“It’s always exciting to win on a golden goal and to do it against Richmond, one of the strongest teams we face all year, makes it that much more special,” said 19th year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93.  “The first half was relatively even, though we definitely had to weather the storm defensively in the second half.  But even with all of their possession, it took a set piece for them to break us down.

“Otto was an absolute force tonight on both goals, and simply would not be denied.  She deserves her hero status for the night.”

Longwood and Richmond battled scoreless through the first 45 minutes, and through nearly 20 minutes of the second half before Ottavio took the ball through the middle of the box while beating a defender and the keeper with a shot to the left side of the net at 64:35.  The Spiders, however, controlled most of the action for the remainder of the period and finally moved the net on a header by Ashley Williams from a corner kick by Natalie LeClair in the 78th minute.  It was 1-1 following 90 minutes of regulation, and it remained that way after the first 10-minute overtime session.  Ottaviofinally ended the well-played match successfully for the Lancers at 100:50 when she took a loose ball in the box and once again beat the keeper with a hard shot to the left side for the sudden victory.

Richmond took a 17-8 advantage in shots, including 10-5 in attempts on goal, and the Spiders had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks too.  Junior Kelsey Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage) had three shots, two on goal, and Ottavio had her two shots, on goal for Longwood.  Senior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills. E. Godwin) played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers with nine saves.

LeClair had four shots, three on goal, to lead Richmond while Andrea Young played the duration for the Spiders with three saves.

Longwood and Richmond were playing for the seventh time in the sport of women’s soccer, and the Spiders still lead the close series, 3-2-2.

Tribe Lose to Tennessee in double OT

Knoxville, Tenn. - The William and Mary women's soccer team dropped a hard fought, 1-0, overtime match Friday night to the Tennessee Lady Volunteers.  After 90 minutes of action, the two teams needed extra time to settle the dispute.  In the 107th minute of the second overtime, Tennessee netted the deciding goal on a penalty kick.  The Tribe falls to 0-2 on the year, while UT improves to 3-0 on the season.

"We battled hard," stated head coach John Daly. "Our possession needed to be better tonight but with that being said, Caroline Casey was outstanding in goal and our defense played well."

After withstanding an early Tennessee attack in the opening minutes of the match, sophomore Aly Shaughnessy countered for the Tribe with a shot on goal in the 13th minute.  For the remainder of the half, W&M kept the Lady Vols scoreless as freshman keeper Caroline Casey recorded three saves.

As the second half started, the Green and Gold wasted little time in getting off to an opportunistic start.  Senior Cortlyn Bristol fired a shot on goal in the 48th minute, but was turned away by Tennessee sophomore keeper Julie Eckel.  After getting an early shot on frame, W&M fended off multiple UT charges until regulation ended in a scoreless tie.

The College turned up the pressure in the first overtime period, taking two shots on goal and a total of three shots in the span of four minutes.  In the 92nd minute, Bristol launched a shot on goal and moments later the Chantilly, Va., native fired another quality shot on frame, but was turned back on consecutive attempts.

Tennessee came out applying the pressure in the second overtime period.  The Vols mounted numerous attacks on goal, but were denied each time by Casey.  For the match, Casey tallied a career-high nine saves.  With under four minutes remaining in the contest, Tennessee's junior Caroline Brown scored the game-winner on a penalty kick.

The College concludes play in the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic on Sunday, Aug. 26, against the Akron Zips in a match slated for 12:30 p.m.  Fans can follow the action at TribeAthletics.com with live stats.

Longwood Shutout by No. 17 Coastal Carolina to begin season

LONGWOOD DROPS SEASON OPENER 4-0 to #17 COASTAL CAROLINA\

CONWAY, S.C. -- The Longwood University men’s soccer team was defeated by #17 Coastal Carolina University, 4-0, in the Lancers’ 2012 season opener and first-ever Big South Conference matchup at CCU Soccer Field in Conway, S.C. on Friday evening. The Chanticleers (1-0) outshot the Lancers (0-1), 24-2, en route to earning the victory in what turned out to be a very physical outing. Longwood returns to action on Tuesday, August 28 at 5 p.m. when the squad travels to Presbyterian College for its second of three-straight conference contests beginning at 5 p.m.

“We came up against a seasoned team tonight and while we didn’t back down, we just couldn’t match their quality,” said head coach Jon Atkinson. “It would have been nice to not have gifted their opening goals, as we felt the longer the game wore on, the better our chances would have been, but we give Coastal their credit. We saw a caliber team this evening and last year’s Big South Conference champs and it has showed our team the level they must achieve to become a player at this level. We will regroup and prepare for what will be a quick turnaround and a good opportunity to bounce back on Tuesday at Presbyterian.”

The teams battled through 27 minutes of scoreless play before Coastal Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the 28thminute of play, as Justin Portillo received a pass from Ashton Bennett and made two touches to beat sophomore goalkeeper Paul Hegedus|Ashburn (Broad Run) to the right post.

Just over a minute later, Coastal sent a cross in front of the net that was deflected off the head of a Longwood defender for an own goal, making it a 2-0 game.

Bennett sealed the victory for the Chanticleers with two goals in the second half. His first came in the 74th minute of play, when he dribbled to the left side of the box and fired a shot hard and low past freshman goalkeeper Carl Carpenter|Charlottesville (St. Anne’s Belfield). Less than ten minutes later, Bennett struck again, this time finding the back of the net off a pass from Shawn McClaws.

Vinnie Llana|Raleigh, N.C. (Broughton) and Anthony Ugorji|Washington, D.C. (Archbishop Carroll) tallied one shot apiece for the Lancers. Ugorji notched Longwood’s lone shot on goal of the outing. Bennett led all players with a game-high seven shots, including four on goal.

Carpenter registered eight saves in his collegiate debut, seeing 53:42 minutes of action after coming off the bench in the first half. Hegedus notched one save in 36:18 minutes in front of the net.

Friday’s match marked the second meeting all-time between Longwood and Coastal Carolina, with the Chanticleers tying the series at one a side.
