Tribe Women Host UNCW Thursday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women's soccer team continues its league slate hosting UNCW on Thursday, Oct. 4.  Kickoff from Martin-Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.   The Tribe enters the match with an overall record of 9-3 and a CAA mark of 3-0, while the Seahawks own a season ledger of 7-5-1 and a league record of 2-2.  Fans can follow the action online at TribeAthletics.com with live video and stats.



Scouting the Tribe
Last weekend, the College recorded a pair of CAA wins by defeating George Mason 1-0 and Towson 5-0.  In the match at George Mason, senior Cortlyn Bristol's goal in the 60th minute propelled the Green and Gold to its 19th victory all-time over the Patriots.  Two-days later, five W&M players registered goals in the decisive 5-0, victory at Towson.  Once again, Bristol led the way, as the Chantilly, Va., native  netted the game winner just eight minutes into the affair.  Senior Mallory Schaffer and junior Audrey Barry connected on scores, while senior Jackie Blake-Hedges and freshman Samantha Cordum netted their first career goals.  Schaffer leads the Tribe with 18 points coming on eight goals and two assists, while Bristol has produced fours goals and six assists.

Scouting the Seahawks
In its last outing, UNCW dropped a hard-fought, 1-0 decision to league foe Delaware on Sept. 30.  Prior to its match against Delaware, the Seahawks were riding a two-game winning-streak, which included victories over Northeastern and Drexel.  Senior Stephanie Rose leads UNCW with 18 points coming on six goals and six assists, while senior Kim Currie and freshman Morgan Leyble have tallied nine points coming on three goals and three assists each.   The Seahawks own a NSCAA Mid-Atlantic regional ranking of No. 5. 

News and Notes
- Thursday's match will mark the 20th meeting between the Tribe and the Seahawks, as W&M leads the all-time series 19-0.   Last year,  the College cruised to a 3-0 victory at Wilmington, behind goals from Mallory Schaffer (2) and Cortlyn Bristol.

- After an outstanding week on the pitch, Tribe senior Cortlyn Bristol was named the CAA Player of the Week on Monday.  The Chantilly, Va., native netted the game-winning scores against George Mason and Towson.  The preseason All-CAA selection also recorded an assist against the Tigers.  The Player of the Week distinction was the second of Bristol's career and first this season.

- In this week's NSCAA poll, the Tribe is the first team receiving votes and is on the cusp of breaking through into the Top 25.  In the publication's regional rankings, the Green and Gold is ranked No. 1 among Mid-Atlantic teams.  The Tribe is ranked 35th in the country according to TopDrawerSoccer.com's weekly poll of the nation's Top 64 teams.

- Since 1981, W&M has played four matches on Oct. 4, and owns a record of 3-1 on that date.  In its four contests on the fourth day of the month, the Tribe has outscored its opponents, 9-2.

- In CAA action, the Tribe is the only team in the league that hasn't yielded a conference goal.  W&M started CAA play posting shutouts over James Madison (2-0), George Mason (1-0) and Towson (5-0).  For the year, the Green and Gold has scored 24 goals, while allowing just seven.

Women's Soccer Dominant in 4-0 Win Over Akron

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Behind three first-half goals, the William and Mary women's soccer team cruised past Akron, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon in its final game of the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic.  Senior Cortlyn Bristol scored twice and recorded an assist in the College's first victory of the 2012 season.  The win improves W&M 's ledger to 1-2, while Akron suffered its first lost of the year, falling to a record of 2-1.

"We put together strong attacks, we created good opportunities and scored some quality goals," stated head coach John Daly. "On our first goal, (Dani) Rutter and (Kiersten) Harpe assisted to (Cortlyn) Bristol with a good header.  On the second score, the corner kick was cleared back to Bristol as she found (Mallory) Schaffer for a strong header. The thrid goal came on a neat finish by Bristol as she took advantage of the situation.  Our final goal, came off a cross from (Erin) Liberatore as (Audrey) Barry placed it into the far corner with the header."

In the opening half, the Tribe wasted no time in jumping out in front of the Zips.  In the 14th minute, Bristol netted the College's first score of the afternoon off assists from junior Dani Rutter and senior Kiersten Harpe.  For the score, Bristol elevated over the Akron defense as she headed the ball into the bottom left corner of frame.   The Green and Gold pushed its advantage to 2-0 in the 20th minute.  From just inside six yards, senior Mallory Schaffer headed in her second goal of the year off a cross from just outside the 18 on a free kick from Bristol.  

The half's trifecta came from Bristol in the 29th minute, as a Zips defender deflected in her attempted shot on frame for W&M's third score of the half.  In the opening 45 minutes, the College totaled 16 shots with six on goal.  Behind a stout backline and the play of freshman keeper Caroline Casey, the Tribe kept Akron off the scoreboard.     

In the second half, W&M kept its foot on the pedal as it generated frequent scoring opportunities.  The College capitalized in the 82nd minute when junior Audrey Barry netter her first score of the year with the assist coming from senior Erin Liberatore. 

For the match, the College outshot Akron, 27-8.  W&M also held the edge in shots on goal, 9-5, and corner kicks, 8-1.  Senior goalie Carla Manger tallied five saves as she maintained the frame for the Tribe in the second-half.
