Spirit Players Harris, Krieger Selected for U.S. WNT Roster to face Canada in Toronto

Two Washington Spirit players have been chosen to join the USWNT squad to face rivals Canada. Ali Krieger (Alexandria, VA) and Ashlyn Harris will be part of the 21 players on the roster as the team travels to Toronto.

Spirit shutout Tarheels 2-0 in preseason college series

GERMANTOWN, Md. (Mar. 30, 2013) - The Washington Spirit professional women's soccer team defeated defending NCAA champions North Carolina 2-0 today in front of 1725 fans at the sunny Maryland SoccerPlex. The Spirit have yet to concede a goal, in what was their third preseason exhibition game in two weeks, with two more to go until starting their first National Women's Soccer League season in Boston on April 14.

The Spirit have now played 270 minutes of scoreless soccer at the back, despite starting today without several players expected to patrol the back line for the regular season, including missing international veterans Ali Krieger, Robyn Gayle and Candace Chapman. Krieger, Gayle, Ashlyn Harris and Diana Matheson all missed today's game while on international duty. Chapman has nearly recovered from off-season knee surgery, and was out of uniform today. 

Duke hold Washington Spirit to scoreless draw

GERMANTOWN, Md. (Mar. 24, 2013) - Fielding a lineup mirroring one that could easily start the NWSL season April 14, the Washington Spirit battled the Duke Blue Devils to a entertaining, yet disappointing 0-0 draw in front of 544 fans at the Maryland SoccerPlex home today. The match is the second of a five-game preseason college exhibition series planned by the Spirit as they prepare for their first season in the National Women's Soccer League.

All games in the series are free to attend, with the Spirit taking on the defending National Champion North Carolina on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the SoccerPlex. Over 2,200 tickets have been claimed for the match so far; with fans wishing to attend only needing to claim passes at tickets.washingtonspirit.com.

Playing in their only game of the preseason due to upcoming national team games, Ali Krieger, Ashlyn Harris, Diana Matheson, and Robyn Gayle all started in Mike Jorden's 4-3-3 formation. It was also the debut for U.S. international Lori Lindsey, who is expected to remain with her Spirit teammates for the duration of preseason, barring a late call-up.

Florida draftee Holly King also made an appearance today while home on spring break. The third round draft pick is finishing school before joining the Spirit full time in May.

USWNT players Krieger, Lindsey officially join Washington Spirit

Now that U.S. Soccer and the Women's National Team Players Association have finalized material terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, USWNT players are beginning to join their clubs to prepare for the upcoming inaugural NWSL season.

Both Ali Krieger and Lori Lindsey arrived at Spirit facilities on March 20 to start working with their teammates.

Few U.S. players have played as many professional club matches as Ali Krieger. For five seasons in Germany, she represented FFC Frankfurt, one of the top clubs in Europe and the world. She came back to the USA to play in the new National Women's Soccer League and is looking forward to having those same lessons learned in the highly competitive pro game replicated on U.S. soil so that she, and many other American players, can maximize their potential.

Recently players from Virginia have been making quite a name for themselves on the natianal soccer scene with Ali Krieger gaining much deserved attention during the Women's World Cup and the news yesterday that D.C. United Academy talent Bill Hamid has been named to the USMNT roster for the August 10th match against rivals Mexico.

Looking to follow in their footsteps eight players have been identified through Virginia ODP to attend U.S. National Team I.D. Camps.

Virginia will have eight representatives at this year’s US National Team U-14 training camps. Three at the Girls’ National Team I.D. Camp held in Portland, Oregon and five Boys’ National Team I. D. Camp in Cason, California.

Goalkeeper Katelyn Jensen (McLean FC; Brambleton, Va.), midfielder Madeline McCracken (Central Virginia United; Lynch Station, Va.), and forward Caroline Kerns (PWSI; Reston, Va.) are attending the camp, which runs from July 31 through August 7. The camp features 72 of the most talented female players in the country who were born in 1997 or 1998 and is run by U.S. Soccer Women’s Development Director Jill Ellis. These players will be evaluated for a 36-player U-14 Girls’ National Team training camp later this fall and will form the core of the 2012 U-15 Girls’ National Team player pool.

Goalkeeper Drew Romig (Richmond Kickers; Midlothian, Va.), defenders Cole Spofford (VSA Heat; Broad Run, Va.) and Trey Vinson (PWSI Courage; Manassas, Va.), and midfielders Kevin Coleman (FC Richmond; Warreneton, Va.), and Brandon Williamson (D.C. United; Gainesville, Va.) are attending the camp, which runs from July 31 through August 6. The 80 players, under the direction of U-14 BNT head coach Manny Schellscheidt, will train together twice daily at the National Training Center. U.S. Soccer technical advisors and the national scouting network select the players for the identification camp.

These players were identified for these National team camps through US Youth Soccer ODP. US Youth Soccer ODP is divided into four regions with Virginia being in Region I. Virginia ODP is also divided into five districts – Central, Northern, Southeastern, West-Central and Western. Last year, 75 players (boys and girls) were named to Region I ODP squads.

Mia Hamm Celebrity Challenge in D.C. a Huge Success

The 4th Annual Mia Hamm Celebrity Soccer Challenge made it's first ever appearance in Washington, D.C. on Sunday at Kastles Stadium at the Wharf and it was a huge success.

Despite the brutal heat on a classic D.C. summer day the fans came out in force to come see Mia Hamm, Nomar Garciaparra, Kobe Bryant, and multiple members of the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team. The event benefits the Mia Hamm Foundation & Children's National Medical Center as well as to raise awareness of the Be a Match program which educates and encourages people to take the first step to become a bone marrow donor.

    Fans where treated to an amazing event with opportunities to meet and get autographs from some of their favorite USWNT players including Alex Morgan, Heather O'Reilly, Tobin Heath, and Virginia native Ali Krieger. There where NBA stars, current and retired NFL Players, former USMNT players, actors, and even local media members taking part in the action on the court which pitted the previously undefeated team lead by Nomar Garciaparra (3-0) against the team led by his wife and the most popular soccer player in U.S. soccer history, Mia Hamm.




The action was fast-paced often leaving little time for accurate updates via Twitter as @VASoccerNews attempted to provide live updates often witnessing multiple goals in less than one minute of each other. In the end Mia's team battled back for an exciting golden goal win in extra time provided by John Harkes (90 USMNT caps).

By far the biggest celebrity draw was NBA 5-time NBA Champion Kobe Bryant who is a big fan of the beautiful game and a well know F.C. Barcelona supporter. Kobe held his own and putt on a great show along with the rest of the celebrity participants. To be certain the most positive thing to happen on this day was the fact that Be a Match actually ran out of test kits due to the overwhelming support and participation of the fans in attendance who where all clearly moved by the half-time stories of families and their donors. Krieger, Pope, and Harkes to play in Mia Hamm Celebrity Soccer Challange

The celebrity partipant list is starting to shape up for the upcoming Mia Hamm Celebrity Soccer Challange.

For the first time in its history Washington, D.C. will host the annual Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra Celebrity Soccer Challenge on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Kastles Stadium. Celebrities, professional athletes and local media personalities will participate in the 7 on 7 soccer match to support the Mia Hamm Foundation and Children’s National Medical Center. 





Confirmed players to date include:  

U.S. Women’s National Team players Alex Morgan and Ali Krieger have signed on to support the game. Morgan was the youngest player on this year’s World Cup team and made a big impact with two goals in five games. Krieger (Dumfries, VA) played every minute of the 2011 World Cup and has 24 caps in her career.

NBA star Jeff Green (Hyattsville, MD), who played collegiately at Georgetown University and now for the Boston Celtics. He was taken 5th overall in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Celtics and after a trade to Seattle was subsequently named to the 2008 NBA All-Rookie team. Green was traded back to the Celtics this past year and had a great playoff run. 

Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson is a native of Natick, MA and naturally a fan of former Red Sox ace Nomar Garciaparra growing up. In his first full season he was named to the 2010-11 NHL All-Rookie Team.

Former DC United and Hall of Famer Eddie Pope returns to the pitch. Pope was a three-time World Cup competitor and played 11 seasons for DC United. Pope was voted into the 2011 Soccer Hall of Fame class earlier this year.

FC Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola will leave the sidelines and return to the pitch to play. As good as a player as he was he may be a better coach. He became the youngest UEFA Champions League winning coach in his first year and in his second won six titles in six competitions. Also, playing from FC Barcelona will be legendary goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta.

John Harkes was the first American ever to play in the English Premier League is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. He appeared in two FIFA World Cup tournaments, and won two MLS Cup titles with DC United. Now Harkes is a color commentator for the MLS on ESPN.

Host of ESPN’s Around the Horn and Pardon the Interruption’s “stat boy” Tony Reali will display his soccer skills in the challenge.  

Area media members scheduled to participate include Mike Wise, a Washington Post columnist and host of WJFK The Fans’ Mike Wise Show;  Ivan Carter, the host of Comcast SportsNet Washington Post Live; WRC NBC4 sports anchor Dan Hellie;  Pamela Brown and Britt McHenry of WJLA ABC 7. WTOP sports director and DC United TV announcer Dave Johnson will bring his signature call of “It’s in the Net!” to Kastles Stadium. 

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

The annual soccer challenge is hosted by the Mia Hamm Foundation to create awareness on bone marrow diseases and assist in growing the National Marrow Donor Program Registry, now called Be The Match.
