The Allison Park, Pa., native capped an impressive 2012
campaign being named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, for
the second consecutive season, while earning All-CAA First Team
distinctions. Schaffer also earned
second-team NSCAA and Senior Class All-America honors. She finished her final campaign in a Green

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - For
the second year in a row, William and Mary senior co-captain Mallory Schaffer
was honored as the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year on Thursday
night at the league's annual awards banquet.
The Allison Park, Pa., native joins former W&M standouts Missy
Wycinski '99 and Claire Zimmeck '08 as the only individuals to repeat as the
conference player of the year. Additionally,
Schaffer is the sixth student-athlete from the College to earn player of the
year distinction. In all, nine members
of the Tribe were honored as All-CAA selections.
Despite consistently drawing the oppositions' best efforts
defensively, Schaffer shined in 2012 as she ranked third in the CAA in points
(23) and goals (10). Her finest moment
of the season occurred in the Green and Gold's pivotal match against Hofstra on
Oct. 21. Down 2-1 with less than three
minutes remaining and with the league regular season title on the line, Schaffer
netted the equalizer, and sent the contest into overtime en route to helping the
College defeat Hofstra, 3-2.
Off the pitch, the awards and accolades accumulated for the
All-American. Before the start of the
season, Schaffer was named to the 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy Award Watch List for
the second consecutive year.
Additionally, she was named one of 10 national finalists for the 2012
Senior Class Award. On Sept. 3, she was
named the league player of the week and earned a spot on Soccer America's Team of the Week after scoring two goals and
registering an assist against Richmond and Auburn.
A three-time All-CAA First-Team honoree, Schaffer has netted
41 goals and 96 points during her career, which rank sixth and seventh,
respectively, most in school history.
Bristol earned a spot on the league's first team for the
second year in row. In arguably her most
accomplished season in a Green and Gold uniform, the Chantilly, Va., native has
tallied a nation-leading 13 assists to go along with five goals scored in 2012. Against UNCW on Oct. 4, the preseason All-CAA
selection tallied a career-high three assists in the College's decisive victory
over the Seahawks.
After scoring the game-winning goals and netting an assist
in consecutive matches against George Mason and Towson, Bristol was named the
CAA Player of the Week and earned a spot on TopDrawerSoccer.com's
National Team of the Week. Additionally,
Bristol's 13 assists this season are tied with Ann Cook '97 for W&M's fifth-best
single-season total, while her 28 career helpers are tied with Natalie Neaton
'95 for fourth most in program history.
Harpe garners All-CAA First-Team distinctions for the first
time in her career. For the year, the
Lake Mary, Fla., native has tallied two assists from her defensive position and
was named to the Villanova All-Tournament team after an outstanding weekend on
the pitch in Philadelphia, Pa. The
anchor of the Tribe's backline, Harpe has made 64 career starts in 70
appearances for the Green and Gold.
Rutter, who ranks third on the team with 17 points coming on
seven goals and three assists, headlined the College's second-team
honorees. On two occasions this season,
the York, Pa., native scored a pair of goals in the College's victories over
Old Dominion and UNCW. For her efforts
against the Monarchs, Rutter was named the CAA Player of the Week on Oct.
29. This year's all-league accolade is the
first of her career.
For the second straight year, Fredrikson was named to the
conference's second team after another impressive season on the College's line
of defense. Furthermore, Fredrikson
tallied an assist in the Green and Gold's, 3-2, overtime win over Hofstra on
Oct. 21. For the season, the Ashburn,
Va., native has started every match for the Tribe, which has only allowed 14 goals
this season and ranks second in the CAA.
Headlining the Tribe's representation on the all-rookie team
was Baxter, who netted 10 points on four goals and two assists. Joining the Pennington, N.J., native on the
all-rookie squad was freshman keeper Caroline Casey. Starting all 19 matches between the posts for
the College, Casey's exceptional season has seen the Chesapeake, Va., native
earn Tennessee and Villanova All-Tournament team honors. In the CAA, she ranks second in goals against
average (0.76) and save percentage (.837), while her six shutouts stand in
third.
Also making impressive debuts this season were Irvin and
Platenberg, who landed spots on the all-rookie team. A starter since the season opener, Irvin has
cemented herself as one of the Tribe's most consistent performers as the
Charlottesville, Va., native tallied two assists in 19 contests. Meanwhile, Platenberg demonstrated her skills
early in the season en route to registering five points on two goals and an
assist. On Oct. 8., the Fairfax Station,
Va., native was named the CAA Rookie of the Week after she scored a pair of
goals in W&M's win over Georgia State.
The Tribe will begin its quest for the program's 11th
conference championship when it takes on Hofstra in Friday's second semifinal
match. The contest is scheduled to
kick-off at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field at 7:30 p.m. Fans can follow the action online at

In first half action, the Tribe dominated possession and was
poised to take an early advantage courtesy of multiple scoring opportunities. Senior Cortlyn Bristol's look in the 27th
minute was destined for the net, but the Chantilly, Va., native's rocket off
her left foot hit the far post. Old
Dominion's backline withstood until the Green and Gold opened its scoring
onslaught in the 34th minute. From six
yards away, sophomore Emory Camper shelved junior Ali Heck's cross from the
right side, giving W&M the 1-0 lead.
At halftime, the Tribe owned the advantage in shots, 13-1, and corner
kicks, 5-1.
In the 63rd minute, junior Dani Rutter extended the
College's lead to 2-0 after the York, Pa., native blasted home her sixth goal
of the year. Bristol took the initial
shot that was saved back into the field of play, while Rutter was there to
punch in the rebound. The assist was
Bristol's team-high 13th of the season.
Rutter put the match out of reach with her second goal of the night in
the 74th minute. This time, senior
Mallory Schaffer placed a perfectly placed through ball to a streaking Rutter,
who proceeded to crank home the Tribe's third score of the night on a
breakaway.
For the match, the Green and Gold outshot ODU, 28-2, and
held the advantage in shots on goal, 10-0.
Additionally, W&M recorded eight corner kicks compared to Old
Dominion's two. The victory also
improves W&M's all-time record against ODU to 21-2-1.
The Tribe will return to action in the 2012 CAA Tournament
semifinals on Nov. 2, from Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field at a time
to be announced, as it will play the winner of the quarterfinal match up
between Hofstra and Northeastern.

Scouting the Tribe
The College defended its home pitch last weekend with a pair
of wins against CAA competition. On
Friday night, the Green and Gold defeated Northeastern, 2-1, while the Tribe
downed Hofstra, 3-2 in a double overtime thriller on Sunday. The two wins have propelled W&M atop the
CAA standings, and the Tribe now controls its own postseason destiny. A win against Old Dominion on Wednesday night
will cement the College as the 2012 CAA Tournament host, while a setback or tie
will leave a possibility of hosting.
Seniors Mallory Schaffer and Cortlyn Bristol lead the Tribe
with 22 points apiece. Schaffer, who
sent the Hofstra match into overtime with a goal in the 87th minute, has scored
a team-high 10 goals to go along with two assists. Bristol, who scored the game-winning goal
against Hofstra, has tallied a team-high 12 assists while pouring in five
goals. Junior Dani Rutter continues to
impress as the Burke, Pa., native has netted five goals and three assists,
while freshman Nicole Baxter has accounted for four goals and two assists.
Scouting the Monarchs
On Sunday, Old Dominion dropped a hard-fought home match to
Northeastern, 2-1, in overtime. However,
the Monarchs defeated Hofstra, 2-1, which at the time was atop the league
standings. Senior Ashlee Coutu and
sophomore Jessie Klamut scored goals in ODU's victory over the Pride. Coutu leads the Monarchs with 13 points on
six goals and one assist, while junior Amber Cook has tallied four goals and
one helper. Each of ODU's last four
matches has been decided by one goal. Head
coach Joe Pereira is in his 18th season at the helm of the Old Dominion
program.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women's soccer team defeated Hofstra, 3-2 in double-overtime on Sunday afternoon from Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. On senior day, it was only fitting that seniors Cortlyn Bristol and Mallory Schaffer lifted the Tribe past the Pride. Bristol connected on the game-winning goal in the 106th minute, while Schaffer sent the contest to overtime with the equalizer in the 87th minute of regulation. The win improves the College's record to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in CAA play, while Hofstra falls to 10-7 on the year and 6-3 in league action. Additionally, the Green and Gold clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming CAA Tournament.
Hofstra opened the scoring on Sunday afternoon with a goal in the 20th minute. Pride freshman Jeannine Molleda went unassisted and sent a high shot that was initially thwarted up in the air by W&M freshman keeper Caroline Casey. However, the bounce went the Pride's way as the ball trickled in to the right netting of goal. Moment's after the Pride took the early lead, an HU defender was whistled for a red card, which gave the Tribe "a man up" advantage for the remainder of the afternoon.
Sophomore Emory Camper knotted the match up at 1-1 courtesy of her third score of the season in the 35th minute. Bristol initialized the opportunity, as the Chanitlly, Va., native sent a cross from the left side to Camper, who proceeded to punch home the goal from six yards away. The half ended with W&M owning the edge in shots, 9-6, and Hofstra holding the advantage in shots on goal, 4-2.
In the 59th minute, Hofstra went ahead 2-1 after junior Brittnay Farriella tapped in freshman Leah Galton's original attempt from inside the six on a shot that was saved but not controlled by W&M. With the match drawing towards a close, and with Hofstra still leading, Schaffer gave the College life again after the reigning CAA Player of the Year blasted home the equalizer in the 87th minute. At midfield. sophomore Emily Fredrikson sent a pass to freshman Nicole Baxter, who then placed a perfectly placed through ball to Schaffer. From that point, the Allison Park, Pa., native shelved her 10th goal of the season into the lower right netting of goal.
After the opening 10 minutes of overtime yielded no score, the Green and Gold took over in the second extra minute period. From the start, W&M dominated possession and in the 106th minute, the Tribe broke through with the game-winning goal. From eight yards away and on the right side, Bristol cranked home the game-winner off her left foot on a one-timed bounce from Camper's deflected attempt on goal.
Statistically, the Tribe dominated in shots, 20-9 and corner kicks, 7-2. Hofstra finished the afternoon with seven shots on goal compared to the Tribe's six.
The College returns to action on Wednesday night, as it closes regular-season play hosting Old Dominion in a match slated to begin at 7 p.m.
