Sangbouasy Hat Trick Leads UMW Men over St. Mary's College, 4-1

Junior midfielder Tommy Sangbouasy scored three goals to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over St. Mary's College on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 10-5-1 overall and 3-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

Sangbouasy opened the scoring in the fifth minute on an assist from Patrick Kelly, and scored againat 25:38 on a pass from senior Matt Alter. Davis Holland scored for the Seahawks just over one minute later, and the score stood at 2-1 at halftime.

In the second, Sangbouasy completed the hat trick at 49:24 unassisted, and freshman josh Campbell capped the scoring at 77:33 on a Nick Shepherd corner kick.

Mary Washington led in shots, 14-7, and in corner kicks, 8-5. Sophomore Tyler Back had two saves and freshman Edwin Lazo added two for the Eagles, while Austin brown had four saves for the Seahawks.

The Eagles will host nationally-ranked York College of Pa. on Saturday for Homecoming in another Capital Athletic Conference contest at 3:30 p.m.

UMW Women Beat St. Mary's College, 1-0


Sophomore defender Jenny Mayo scored on a scrum in front of goal in the 76th minute to propel the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory over St. Mary's College of Md. on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground. UMW improves to 11-1-2 on the season.

It was the Seahawks who jumped out of the gates early, outshooting the Eagles, 11-3, in the opening half. UMW also had several counter oppourtunities, but neither team would score, thanks mainly to 10 first half saves from UMW sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Owens.

In the second half, the roles were reversed, as UMW outshot the Seahawks, 10-7. St. mary's keeper Kelsey Wirtz made six second half stops, but it was Mayo, on a ball that was deflected off of several players on a Lizzie Weast corner kick, found the nets at 75:13. St. Mary's had a breakaway opportunity in the final 10 minutes, but Owens made a sprawling block to nullify the play.

St. Mary's led in shots, 18-13, while UMW led in corner kicks, 8-4, with six coming in the second half. Owens had 12 saves on the day.

The Eagles improve to 11-1-2 overall, and 3-1-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play. They will host Bridgewater College on Saturday at 1:00 pm for Homecoming.

UMW Women Beat Howard 3-1

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team scored three goals in the final 15 minutes of play to earn a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Howard University on Tuesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 8-1-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, the Bison scored at 60:11 on an unassisted goal from Jordan Brown. The Eagles raced back with three goals in the final 14:37, as Kelsey Carter scored to tie the game at 75:23, and freshman Jessica Bednarcik scored at 80:40 and again at 84:19 on an assist from Erin Reynolds.

The Eagles held a 10-9 edge in shots, while Howard led in corner kicks, 5-2. UMW goalkeeper Charlotte Owens had three saves in goal, while Kyra Dickinson had five stops for Howard.

The victory over a Division I program is the first for UMW since 1990, when the Eagles topped American University, 2-1.

Mary Washington will visit York College of Pa. in a key Capital Athletic Conference showdown on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

UMW Women Blowout Wesley College, 5-0

Freshman Jessica Bednarcik scored one goal and assisted on three others and junior Erin Reynolds added a pair of goals to lead the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Wesley College on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-1-1 on the year.

Freshman Adrian Newcomb opened the scoring on a Bednarcik assist at 13:26, and Bednarcik followed with her eighth goal of the season at 17:06. UMW held the 2-0 lead at halftime.

In the second, Reynolds scored on Bednarcik assists at 52:41 and 57:48. Freshman Anna Brauch scored her first goal on a Caitlyn Denkler corner kick to cap the scoring at 88:45.

The Eagles led in shots, 32-2, and in corner kicks, 8-2. Charlotte Owens made one save in UMW goal, splitting the shutout with Alyssa Goodwin and Alexa Faraone. Sydney Kahan had nine saves and Samantha Brannigan had seven for Wesley.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they host Division I Howard University at 4:00 p.m.

UMW Men Beat NC Wesleyan in OT Thriller, 3-2


The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team fought back from an early two goal deficit to earn a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory Wednesday over North Carolina Wesleyan College at the Battleground on the campus of the University of Mary Washington. The Eagles improve to 5-4 on the season with the victory, while handing the Battling Bishops their first loss of the year.

NC Wesleyan took an early one goal advantage when Andri Bjarnason scored an unassisted goal just 17 seconds into the game on a strike from 40 yards out. Bjarnason added a second goal at the 36:16 mark in the first half from about the same distance to put NC Wesleyan up 2-0 heading into halftime.

The Eagles stormed back in the second half to tie the match with two goals. Junior Kevin Murphy scored Mary Washington's first goal 20 minutes into the second half to pull the Eagles within one. Junior David Heller evened the score 10 minutes later with a well-placed header off a corner kick from junior Tommy Sangbousy.

The Eagles took control early in the first overtime period, keeping the pressure on NC Wesleyan goaltender Nathan Mangione. With just over two minutes off the clock, Murphy found Sangbouasy in front of the goal for the winning strike. Sangbouasy had a hand in all three Mary Washington goals with two assists and one goal on the day.

Mary Washington will be in action again Saturday as they travel to Marymount (Va.) University for a 7 P.M. match.

UMW Women Beat Randolph-Macon, 4-1


Four different players scored goals as the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team defeated Randolph-Macon College, 4-1, on Wednesday in Ashland, Va. The Eagles improve to 6-1-1 on the year.

The Eagles opened the scoring at 6:59 when junior Tina Rader scored on a Jessica Bednarcik assist. Freshman Lizzie Weast upped the edge to 2-0 at 17:22 on a pass from Adrian Newcomb, and UMW held the 2-0 until halftime.

Randolph-Macon scored its tally at 49:55 on an Erin Hauser goal. The Eagles answered at 68:02 on a score from Erin Reynolds on a Weast, and junior Kelsey Carter capped the scoring at 74:44 on a penalty kick.

The Eagles led in shots, 17-8, and had one corner kick to three for the hosts. Charlotte Owens had three saves in 80 minutes and Alyssa Goodwin none in 10 minutes of play in goal for UMW, while Briana Housekeeper had nine saves for RMC.

Mary Washington will host Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

UMW Men Fall 1-0 at Gettysburg College


The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team dropped its second straight match, falling 1-0 at Gettysburg College on Wednesday night. The Eagles fall to 4-3 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, the Bullets scored the lone goal of the game as Christian Pyros scored at 74:11. In a hard-fought contest, the Bullets held a 10-9 edge in shots. UMW goalkeeper Tyler Back had six saves for the Eagles.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit Salisbury University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener starting at 2:00 p.m.

UMW Women Improve to 5-0 with win over Methodist University


Freshman Jessica Bednarcik scored her sixth goal of the season to lift the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Methodist University on Wednesday afternoon in Fayetteville, N.C. The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the year.

The Eagles opened the scoring at 20:01 on a score from Michelle Gibbons on an assist from Lizzie Weast. The Eagles led, 1-0 at halftime, and carried the advantage until the 57th minute, when Methodist tied the score.
From there, Bednarcik provided the heroics for UMW, scoring unassisted at 66:38.

The Eagles led in shots, 16-13, and each team had six corner kicks. UMW sophomore Charlotte Owens had four saves in goal.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they host Frostburg State University in a battle of Capital Athletic Conference undefeated teams in the league opener. Kickoff at the Battleground is at 1:00 p.m.

UMW Men Shutout Catholic 3-0


Freshman Patrick Kelly scored a pair of goals, and junior Nick Shepherd scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Catholic University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. UMW improves to 4-1 on the year.

Shepherd opened the scoring for UMW, netting his second goal in as many games at 18:03 on a pass from senior Matt Alter. The Eagles upped the lead to 2-0 at 28:19, as Kelly scored on a well-placed pass from Shepherd. UMW led at halftime, 2-0.

The Eagles capped the scoring at 59:23 as Kelly scored on an Omar Ismail assist. The Eagles led in shots, 6-5, and Catholic led in corner kicks, 3-2. Sophomore goalie Tyler Back recorded his third shutout in four games for UMW.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they visit Montclair State University at noon.

Freshmen lead UMW women to 3-0 win over Guilford College



The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team used three goals and three assists from freshmen in a 3-0 win over Guilford College on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring at 19:18, when freshman Michelle Gibbons scored on a Sydney Cook assist. Three minutes later, Cook scored her second goal of the year on a pass from Jessica Bednarcik to up the lead to 2-0, which is where the score stood at halftime.

In the second half, the lone goal came at 59:00, as Bednarcik scored on an Adrian Newcomb assist.

The Eagles led in shots, 15-5, and had seven corner kicks to none for the Quakers. Charlotte Owens had four saves, and Alyssa Goodwin none in relief in goal for UMW.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Methodist University at 4:30 p.m.

UMW Men Shutout Randolph-Macon 3-0

Kelly, Sangbouasy Spark UMW Men's Soccer to 3-0 Win Over Randolph-Macon

Freshman forward Patrick Kelly scored two goals and junior Tommy Sangbouasy added a goal and an assist to spark the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season on the strength of their third straight shutout to start the year.

Kelly opened the scoring in the 25th minute as Kelly scored on an assist from Jake Doyle. Kelly added his third goal of the season at 33:34 on a feed from Sangbouasy, who scored his second goal in as many games with a marker in the 55th minute.

The Eagles led in shots, 13-5, and had two corner kicks to five for the Yellow Jackets. UMW sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Back made one save in goal, while RMC's Chris Lowe had four stops.

Mary Washington (3-0) will return to action on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. when they visit 17th ranked Messiah College.
