United release 2013 preseason schedule

D.C. United announces 2013 preseason schedule

Black-and-Red to train in Florida ahead of 18th MLS season

Washington, D.C. (January 3, 2013) – D.C. United today announced the club’s preliminary preseason schedule, as the team prepares for the 2013 Major League Soccer campaign. United begins its 18th MLS season with its first game on the road against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, March 2 in a 2012 Eastern Conference Finals rematch. The kickoff time for the contest will be determined at a later date.

Players are set to report to RFK Stadium on Thursday, January 17 for physicals and fitness testing. The Black-and-Red begin training in Washington, D.C., the following two days before heading to Bradenton, Fla. While in Bradenton, the team will train at IMG Academy, and are confirmed to square off against Malmö FF (Sweden) on Friday, February 1 at 11:00 a.m.

United face Philly in U.S. Open Cup at SoccerPlex

Two time U.S. Open Cup Champions (1996, 2008) D.C. United are set to face their MLS rivals, the Philadelphia Union tonight at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Last year the Black-and-Red defeated the Union on Penalty Kicks in Open Cup action.
D.C. are coming off a marathon of a match against the Richmond Kickers (USL) in Richmond, VA last week that saw United win 2-1 after 120 minutes of soccer. The match-up of D.C. vs. Philly features two of only eight MLS clubs left in 2012 U.S. Open Cup action after three rounds.
This year the format of the tournament was changed (ussoccer.com: Format, Composition and Schedule Finalized for 99th Edition of Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup) to include all MLS clubs and less than half (8) of the clubs from the top level of U.S. professional soccer are still competing in the fourth round: D.C., Philly, N.Y., Seattle, L.A. (Chivas USA), Colorado, K.C., and San Jose.

Fans of United - Episode 12: Olsen has United Gunning for No. 1 Spot

The latest episode of Fans of United is out now. In episode 12 hosts Devon McTavish, Eric Hunsaker, and Chris Wimmer discuss recent wins by the Black-and-Red over Colorado and Toronto, led by Dero and Salihi.

The podcast crew also look ahead to Saturday's D.C. rematch against New England as United set their sights on the No. 1 spot in atop the MLS Eastern Conference.

A Minute With: Andrew Dykstra, D.C. United Goalkeeper

Last week we launched a new video series called, A Minute With, that featured D.C. United midfielder Danny Cruz (click to see episode 1). The series focuses on players who are from Virginia and have gone on to succeed at the next level be it college, professional, or international. In our latest segment we feature recently signed D.C. United goalkeeper and VCU alum Andrew Dykstra.

Dykstra is a Virginia soccer native and the newest United roster member. In this segment he chats about his roots playing youth and college soccer in Virginia and his new role as goalie with the Black and Red.
