Virginia-Duke Recap
Will Bates (Sr., Chester, Va.) scored in the
58th minute and the Virginia men’s soccer team was stout on defense in
picking up a 1-0 win over Duke last Friday in front of 4,230 fans at
Klöckner Stadium. The match was both teams’
ACC opener.
Marcus Salandy-Defour (Fr., Kensington, Md.)
tracked down a cross near the goal line and tapped it back to Bates,
who sent the ball into the far corner of the goal from six yards out for
the score.
UVa finished with an 11-6 shots advantage; both teams put two shots on goal.
Virginia Bullet Points
• All four Virginia matches have been determined by one goal.
• Bates scored his 35th career goal Friday; he is two goals shy of reaching the UVa career top 10 in goals.
• Spencer LaCivita (So., Raleigh, N.C.)
earned his eighth career shutout Friday vs. Duke; he will reach the UVa
career top 10 with his next shutout.
• All four UVa opponents thus far have been
ranked nationally at some point already this season; six future
opponents are ranked among the various top 25 polls.
• The Tuesday contest with Mount St. Mary’s will mark the fourth of a current six-match homestand.
Noting the Mountaineers
Mount St. Mary’s comes to Charlottesville
with a 1-3 record following a 1-0 loss to UMBC on Friday at home. The
Mountaineers’ first win of the year came Aug. 31 over VMI (1-0).
Defender Mark Plaisance leads the team with
three points (1G, 1A). Mount St. Mary’s is coached by Rob Ryerson, a
member of the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame. The Mount is a member of the
Northeast Conference and is located in Emmetsburg,
Md.
Virginia-Mount St. Mary’s Series
Virginia and Mount St. Mary’s have met seven
times previously, with the Cavaliers capturing each contest. The
programs last played on Sept. 15, 2009, a 1-0 UVa home victory. Virginia
outscored the Mount 18-0 in the seven previous
matches.
Youth is Served
Virginia’s lineup has taken on a much
younger look this year, as the Cavaliers have started at least five
freshmen in each game and have had at least nine underclassmen in each
starting lineup. Six of UVa’s 11 starters against
Duke were freshmen.
Underclassmen have played 81 percent of the possible minutes through four matches (3,348 of 4,125).
Up Next
Virginia steps out of ACC play at 7 p.m.
Friday when it takes on No. 23 Xavier in the first-ever meeting between
the programs. The Musketeers are unbeaten at 4-0-1 this year.
