Dan Borislow, Q & A with Washington Freedom Owner

I recently had a brief exchange with the new Washington Freedom/Magic FC? owner, Dan Borislow. As you can tell from the responses he is not much for long winded answers and fans should finally get to see which direction Borislow is taking the team in 2011 by next week.

VaSoccerNews: Why not move the team to Florida immediately?
Dan Borislow: I want to see where the most fans come out

VaSoccerNews: Why chose to change the team name as opposed to a simple Shirt Sponsorship?
Borislow: Because it is my team

VaSoccerNews: Does your background in youth soccer influence your decision to become part of the WPS and why/how do you see the league succeeding beyond its third year?
Borislow: Soccer as a sport must become larger and the parents must become smart enough to want to take their kids to games so they may watch professional soccer and become better players.

VaSoccerNews: Who is the teams main target audience, women, youth?
Borislow: Everybody.

VaSoccerNews: How important is it to sign Marta to the club? Are you concerned with the history of the teams Marta was a part of (folding)?
Borislow: Marta has nothing to do with teams folding, owners do.Marta should be in our league.

VaSoccerNews: Will the 2011 Women's World Cup have a significant impact on the WPS? If so how?
Borislow: It will only help if the US does well.

VaSoccerNews: Any progress on the GM/Coaching front?
Borislow: Yes.

VaSoccerNews: It has been very quit in the Freedom front office, do you have a message for the fans?
Borislow: Next week.

I will be attending the WPS Draft in a couple of weeks and will try to follow-up with Dan Borislow regarding these questions as well as any transactions that may or may not happen between now and January 14th.

Stay Tuned!

  1. "I want to see where the most fans come out." Like this will be any indication of what the real team support WOULD HAVE BEEN if Danny Boy hadn't already poisoned the well with the team's most fervent supporters.

  2. I'm really blown away, that a business man like him, that clearly relies on hype to sell his product, fails so miserably at communicating the future of his next business venture. The response about the team location has the tone of a dare. If after I've made you mad and you don't meet my expectations, then I will remove the team, is my perception of the comment.

  3. Sales of MJ down 17%. If he has loses over 2 yrs this guy will jump shit. I hope someone is there to bring them back to Washington because the last team failed in South Florida. A lot of Brasilians in Boston too but they did sign Marta. said the day of the week matters more.

  4. Borislow has treated the large longstanding Freedom fan base very poorly, and has not been communicative about the teams future. THE and the management of the team did nothing to announce or welcome the new GM ,and Head Coach, and signing of some of the players. Freedom fans learned about these events via other media , including the Freedom Facebook page, which is now long gone. This 'magic jack' businessman could have had all the fans eating out of his hand, and pumped up for the 2011 season even if not all of the games would be played in DC-but, no he chose to stonewall the fans. He always says some big announcement is coming soon and it NEVER does! I pray he treats the players and staff better than he has the fans!

  5. @LOYAL FREEDOM FAN - Well put and to the point. Basic business etiquette is completely lacking here. I hope we hear something soon.

  6. dan borislow has been saying that he'll make an announcement next week for the past what month or so? i guess he's not concerned that what he's doing is wrong. there are more soccer fans in the dc area. he's slacking, i agree. i mean, come on, ''magictalk sc''? no, washington freedom!!
