Virginia Men’s Soccer Falls 2-1 in Overtime to Georgetown

Carroll scores goal for Cavaliers

GERMANTOWN, Md. – The Virginia men’s soccer team opened its regular-season schedule with a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Georgetown Friday evening in the ACC/BIG EAST Challenge at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md. 

The Hoyas won by virtue of a Virginia own goal just over six minutes into overtime.

“We had a pair of young mistakes, both in the first 30 seconds and then at the end of the game,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “But I liked how we responded to the early goal, and I was very happy with our second half. I hope that at some point later in the year we can look back at this and see how we grew from it because this is an extremely young team. I know that in the future it will benefit us, and we will grow together. Georgetown is a good team, and it’s not going to get any easier next weekend.”

Zach Carroll (Fr., Grand Blanc, Mich.) scored the Cavaliers’ goal. UVa goalkeeper Spencer LaCivita (So., Raleigh, N.C.) made a pair of saves for the Cavaliers. Tomas Gomez made three saves for Georgetown.

After getting out-shot, 4-1, in the first half, Virginia pressured Georgetown throughout the second half and out-shot the Hoyas, 8-5, and finished with a 10-9 shot advantage. UVa also took 10 corner kicks, compared to six for Georgetown. Darius Madison (Fr., Philadelphia, Pa.) took a team-high four shots for Virginia.

Georgetown stunned the Cavaliers with a quick score, as Steve Neumann created a turnover about 25 yards outside the Virginia goal, then beat LaCivita inside the far post just 22 seconds into the match.

The Hoyas hit the crossbar on a Tom Skelly header off a corner kick in the 52nd minute.

The young Cavaliers, who started nine freshmen and sophomores, started clicking offensively midway through the second half. Virginia got its first shot on goal in the 56th minute from 10 yards by Marcus Salandy-Defour (Fr., Kensington, Md.). UVa then just missed connecting for a goal after Chris Somerville (So., West Chester, Pa.) made a great run to the Georgetown endline and then dropped a great service into the box, where Madison headed it just over the crossbar.

After an illegal touch in the box by the keeper Gomez, Virginia was awarded an indirect free kick from just outside the 6-yard box to the right of the goal. The kick caromed off the defense and out to Carroll, who cranked a screaming shot to the right upper 90 in the 70th minute for his first career score.

Georgetown benefited from a fortuitous bounce in the overtime, as a UVa header in the box sailed into the Cavaliers’ goal for the winning score.

Virginia starts its home schedule next Friday night (Aug. 31) when it entertains California at Klöckner Stadium. UVa then plays No. 2 UCLA at home on Sept. 2.

Tribe Begin Season with 0-0 Draw against Butler

RICHMOND, Va. - The William and Mary men's soccer team opened the 2012 season in the VCU Invitational playing Butler to a, 0-0, tie Friday night at the Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.  In only his second collegiate start, sophomore goalkeeper Bennett Jones registered seven saves en route to posting his first career shutout.  As a result of controlling possession for most of the match, W&M generated quality-scoring opportunities, but was unable to net any scores.

"It looked like an early season game," stated Tribe head coach Chris Norris. "However, I was happy with the amount of possession we generated and our ideas were good.  You have to give Butler a lot of credit, they are an athletic and hardworking team. Tonight was a match between two solid teams that have the chance to be good."

In the early going, the College generated a pair of scoring chances with two shots on goal, both coming from junior Roshan Patel, in the opening five minutes of action.  The Green and Gold controlled possession for the majority of the opening half, as it totaled six shots in the initial 45 minutes.  Although Butler put four shots on goal in the first frame, Jones came up with big four stops and kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.

In the second half, the Green and Gold had scoring opportunities.  The Tribe's best chance came in the 84th minute when freshman Jackson Eskay fired a shot on frame that was saved by Butler's junior keeper Jon Dawson.  Four minutes later, the College engineered another good look when Patel sent a rocket toward goal, but a Butler defender blocked the shot before it approached the posts.  As he did in the first-half, Jones kept Butler scoreless, tallying three stops in last 45 minutes.

Just three minutes into the first overtime, sophomore Marcus Luster fired a shot on frame that was saved by Dawson.  The Tribe deflected the Bulldogs only shot in the first extra period as it controlled possession throughout.

In the second overtime period, the College tallied a shot on goal, to go along with two shots and two corner kicks.  W&M's best look came in the 109th minute off of a Patel corner kick.

For the match, the Green and Gold held the advantage over the Bulldogs in shots 17-16.  The Tribe also edged Butler in corners, 6-4, and saves, 7-5.

McLean Youth Soccer's Junior Flores named to U-17 Men's National Team Residency Program

Local youth player Junior Flores of McLean Youth Soccer and Manassas Park,Va. has been named to the U-17 Residency Program.

CHICAGO (Aug. 24, 2012) - The roster for the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team Residency Program was finalized for the 2012 Fall Semester, with 31 players selected to train full-time in Bradenton, Fla. Under the guidance of head coach Richie Williams, the players are in preparation for the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship from April 6-19 in Panama. The CONCACAF U-17 Championship serves as the regional qualifying tournament for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Eleven new players join the roster for the semester including four born in 1997: Sebastian Elney, Malcolm Jones, Peter Schropp and Ben Swanson. In total, six players were born in 1997, while the remaining 25 were born in 1996.

Twenty players return from the previous semester, including a trio of players representing the New York Red Bulls Academy. Evan Louro, Christopher Lema and Wesley Wade all helped the Red Bulls U-15/16 team win the Development Academy championship in July.

"We think we've assembled a very strong roster and we look forward to working with all the players coming back and the new players coming in this semester," U-17 MNT head coach Richie Williams said. "We hope to continue to develop the players both individually and collectively so we can be successful on the field."

The roster also features 28 players from a 40-player camp held in late July at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., and 20 players from the 24-player roster that traveled to Costa Rica for the Copa Saprissa Internacional tournament at the end of June. The U.S. placed second in that competition.

There are 24 players representing 19 Development Academy clubs, including three each from Chivas USA and the New York Red Bulls, while California is listed as the home state for 12 of the 31 players.

The U.S. players live on campus at the IMG Academies in Bradenton and train in the morning under the guidance of Williams and his coaching staff. In the afternoon, the players attend classes at St. Stephen's Episcopal School.

While in the full-time Residency Program, the U.S. team not only trains daily, but also has access to the IMG Academies facilities. The team regularly uses the state-of-the-art strength-training facilities, as well as brand new dormitories and meal rooms.

Beginning in 1999, the Residency Program has given players an opportunity to grow and move up the ladder in the world of soccer and become professionals in Major League Soccer, some of the biggest clubs in Europe and even make an impact on the full U.S. Men's National Team. The program in Bradenton provides players with an environment where they can prosper as individual players and come together as a team ahead of regional and world competition.

Since its inception, more than 300 players have been through the full-time Residency Program, and more than 100 of those players have moved on to Major League Soccer or the professional leagues in Europe. Twenty-four players have also registered at least one cap with the full MNT: Freddy Adu, Gale Agbossoumonde, Juan Agudelo, Jozy Altidore, DaMarcus Beasley, Kyle Beckerman, Michael Bradley, Bobby Convey, Landon Donovan, Eddie Gaven, Omar Gonzalez, Eddie Johnson, Eric Lichaj, Justin Mapp, Chad Marshall, Dax McCarty, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce, Santino Quaranta, Robbie Rogers, Brek Shea, Jonathan Spector, Danny Szetela and Anthony Wallace.

Celebration of Women's Soccer Rosters Announced

Washington, D.C.  (August 23, 2012) – Mark Washo, Managing Partner for Playbook Management International (PMI) Sports and Entertainment Company and former President and General Manager of the Washington Freedom, has announced the final rosters for the women’s charity soccer game that will be played at the Maryland Soccer Plex stadium field on Saturday, August 25, 2012. All net proceeds from the game will benefit the Michael Washo “Art from the Heart” Foundation and DC Scores.

“The response from the players and community has been greater than I anticipated,” said Washo. “The event will kick off with a special meet and greet at Not Your Average Joe’s on Friday and we are very excited about the game and some of the elements we have added.  It will be a special night at the Maryland Soccer Plex and the perfect environment in which to pay tribute to many current and past professional women’s soccer players from the WPS (Freedom), WUSA, WPSL and W league.” 

Becky Sauerbrunn and Lori Lindsey will play a special role in this weekend’s activities, which will start off with a special meet and greet at Not Your Average Joe’s on Friday, August 24^th from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Sauerbrunn will serve as the guest coach for the Celebration of Women’s Soccer All Star’s squad while Lindsey will guide the Maryland Capitols. Each will have final say as they will be provided wireless microphones and will be commentating throughout the game. Sauerbrunn and Lindsey will be available for autographs along with the rest of the players after the game.
