CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 19 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team concluded a
tough two-game road trip with a scoreless draw against Miami Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium.
Junior Dayle Colpitts remained perfect in goal, as she recorded a season-high
seven saves to move the Hokies to 11-4-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in the ACC.
The
Hurricanes moved to 7-6-2 overall and 2-4-1 in conference, as both teams still
remain tied with seven points in the conference standings behind seven
teams.
“Today
was a difficult game for us at Miami,”
commented head coach Chugger Adair. “It was a big game and a hard fought
match
that we worked hard on. To get a result ending in a draw in our
conference is a
good result and we will take a point whenever we can get one. I thought
both
teams played hard, created chances and had opportunities. A tie on the
road at Miami on a difficult field to play at against a tough,
hard fought Miami team, we are happy with the
point.”
The
game started off with a lot of back-and-forth action. Miami’s
Ally Andreini took the first shot of the game almost two minutes into the first
half, but went high. The game was interrupted by a Hokie injury at the 4:42
mark. Jodie Zelenky collided unintentionally with a Hurricane defender and did
not return.
Four
minutes later, Shannon Mayrose took the first Tech shot that went on
goal but Miami’s goalkeeper Emily Lillard was there to make the
stop.
The
two teams traded shots but were unable to connect and the first half ended with
the score still at zero. The Hokies and Hurricanes went into the break with
four shots and a corner kick each.
Miami grabbed the
intensity early in the second and out shot the Hokies 9-2 in the final
regulation. Mayrose tried to put the Hokies up one at the 65:45 mark but
Lillard was there to stop the only Tech shot on goal. Colpitts remained solid
stopping all five of the Hurricanes’ shots on goal to force the game into the
first overtime.
Both
teams battled for possession and were unable to create any chances, as the
final overtime period began.
Time
became a factor as both teams continued to battle, but the clock quickly ticked
down to zero without a goal being scored. Both teams found just one opportunity
in the final overtime period, but both goalies remained perfect.
Miami out shot the
Hokies 14-7 and both teams recorded four corner kicks. The Hurricanes’ Tara
Schwitter recorded a game-high six shots, while Mayrose led the Hokies with two
shots and two on goal.
Both
goalies earned the shutouts, playing all 110 minutes. Colpitts charted a
season-high seven saves and moved to 6-4-1 on the season, while Lillard stopped
four shots and moved to 5-6-2 overall.
Tech
is back in action as it continues on the road Thursday with a 7 p.m. ACC
matchup against Clemson. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
