BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team notched its sixth consecutive shutout, blanking NC State, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Thompson Field to remain undefeated. The six shutouts set a new record for Tech, as it recorded five-straight in its second year of existence back in 1994.

Tech has outscored its opponents 20-2 so far this season. The only team to score on the Hokies was Nebraska over three weeks ago.

Shannon Mayrose and Nicolette Young connected on the goals to help the Hokies improve to 9-0-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in the ACC. The Wolfpack fell to 5-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.

Tech controlled the tempo from start to finish, outshooting NC State in both periods. Even though the first was scoreless, the Hokies were attacking from all angles but just couldn’t connect. The Hokies found eight opportunities with four shots on goal, but the Wolfpack keeper Victoria Hopkins was there to keep the game tied at zero heading into the break.

It wasn’t until the 56th minute that the game opened up for Tech. Off a corner kick taken by Kelsey Loupee, Katie Yensen headed the ball close to the goal and Mayrose flew in from about five yards out and found the far upper corner of the net to put the Hokies up 1-0.

Seven minutes later, Hopkins received a yellow card after fouling Jazmine Reeves in the box and Mayrose took the penalty kick about 10 yards out. The redshirt junior found the upper corner easily to give Tech a two-point lead with her sixth goal of the season.

The final goal came in the 78th minute, when Reeves dribbled down the right sideline to the right side of the box and caused Hopkins to come forward. Reeves made a move right past the goalie and found Young inside the box. The freshman fired a hard shot in the upper corner, as her first career goal ended the ball game.

Tech out shot NC State 23-7 and took eight corner kicks. Mayrose led both teams with five shots and three on goal, while Yensen followed with four shots and two on frame.

Dayle Colpitts (4-0-0) charted the win for the Hokies, as the junior goalkeeper played all 90 minutes and recorded four saves to remain undefeated. Today’s shutout brings Colpitts career total to 15, which makes her five shutouts away from tying Mallory Soldner (2003-06) on Tech’s all-time list.

Despite allowing three goals, Hopkins (5-5-0) tallied 11 saves as she played all 90 minutes and took the loss.

The Hokies return to action Thursday as they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to battle the North Carolina at 7 p.m. The game will be aired on ESPN3, which is the first time Tech has been on an ESPN network during the regular season.
