No. 5 UVA women battle No. 6 UNC Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 5 Virginia women’s soccer team concludes a four-game homestand on Sunday with a top-10 showdown with No. 6 North Carolina at Klöckner Stadium. Game time is 2 p.m., and the game will be available to watch online through Cavaliers Live (subscription required).

Tickets are $7 for adult general admission and $5 for youth, senior and faculty/staff general admission. Group tickets (20 or more) are $4. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a Virginia Soccer scarf. The second portion of Virginia women’s soccer trading cards will go to the first 500 fans in attendance.

The Cavaliers (8-1, 1-0 ACC) enter Sunday’s game on an eight-match win streak, their longest since a nine-game win streak in 2004. On Thursday they downed NC State 4-0 in their ACC opener. Virginia is looking to open the conference season 2-0 for the first time since 2008.  

North Carolina (4-2-1, 0-1 ACC) is coming off a 2-1 loss at Maryland on Thursday in its ACC opener, which snapped a four-game win streak. The Tar Heels are looking to avoid the first 0-2 start to conference play in school history.

The Tar Heels lead the all-time series 35-1-2, including a perfect 13-0-0 record in Charlottesville. Last season the Cavaliers earned their first win in the series with a 1-0 double-overtime victory in Chapel Hill on Caroline Miller’s goal in the 105th minute. Five of the last six meetings between the teams have been decided by one goal, including four overtime contests. Sunday’s game marks just the second time that Virginia has entered a matchup with North Carolina as the higher-ranked team (No. 1 Virginia vs. No. 3 North Carolina in 1990).

Following Sunday’s game, Virginia will have a week off before beginning a two-game road trip at Clemson on Sept. 23. Game time at Historic Riggs Field is 1 p.m., and the game will be broadcast online on ESPN3.
