Richmond’s Callahan Named USL PRO Player of the Week

TAMPA, Fla. - United Soccer Leagues announced the first USL PRO Team of the Week of the 2011 season today, honoring Richmond Kickers midfielder Michael Callahan as Player of the Week for his commanding performance in his team’s 2-0 win against Orlando City on Saturday, April 2.

The Kickers earned the first victory of the 2011 USL PRO season on Saturday afternoon at City Stadium, with Callahan playing a major role. He was joined on the Team of the Week by four teammates; midfielder Stanley Nyazamba and forward Matthew Delicâte each found the back of the net for the Kickers, while defenders Yomby William and Henry Kalungi played a key role in allowing only two shots on goal for the Lions.
River Plate Puerto Rico’s Yaikel Perez joins Delicâte as the other forward on this week’s team after his 80th-minute goal earned his side a 2-2 draw with Sevilla FC Puerto Rico on Saturday night. He was joined by teammates Peter Villegas, who scored on a beautiful give-and-go 10 minutes into the second half to tie the game, and Matias Maroni, who was strong at center back for his side.
Sevilla is represented by defender Nick Cardenas, who gave Sevilla its second lead of the game with a fine headed goal in the 71st minute, and goalkeeper Maximiliano Torlacoff, who made a number of excellent saves throughout the game including one that allowed his side to emerge with a point on the road.
