D.C. United Academy completes New England schedule

Washington, D.C. (April 12, 2011) - D.C. United’s Youth Academy faced two opponents over the past weekend, with the Black-and-Red compiling a 1-2-1 record against FC Greater Boston and the New England Revolution in U.S. Soccer Development Academy play. Both the U-16 and U-18 sides traveled to Boston to play Greater Boston at Harvard University, followed by a trip to Gillette Stadium to play the Revolution.


United’s U-16’s started the weekend with a 1-1 draw against FC Greater Boston on Saturday, April 9. United’s lone goal came from Collin Martin. On Sunday, April 10, the team faced off against MLS rival New England Revolution in a hard-fought match, falling by a final score of 3-2. United’s goals came from Martin Lopez and Ian Harkes.

The U-18 side got the weekend off to a great start on Saturday with a 4-0 win over FC Greater Boston. Goals came from Julian Griggs, Mikias Eticha, Code Albrecht, and Andrew Panknen. However, on Sunday, the team fell 4-1 to the Revs with a late lone goal from Bryan Piriz.

This coming weekend United’s Academy teams will be traveling to Dallas for this year’s Dallas Cup. The U-16 side will be a mixture of U-16 and U-15 players. United’s U-18 team will also be making the journey.

On Wednesday, April 20, a D.C. United U-17 team will travel to Holland to participate in the AEGON Future Cup, which will be held from April 23 through April 25 at the Ajax Academy facility. The Black-and-Red gained entrance into this prestigious tournament by winning the 2010 SUM Cup, Major League Soccer’s comprehensive U-17 Academy tournament. While in Holland, United will be pitted against the likes of Germany’s Bayern Munich, Scotland’s Celtic FC, Brazilian side Fluminense, and the host side, AFC Ajax.
