Top Ten Soccer Movies

My Quick list of the ten best Soccer Movies.

6-10

#6 - Kicking It

The story of six homeless soccer players as they set off for Cape Town, South Africa to play in the Homeless World Cup. Narated by Colin Farrell.

#7 - The Art of Soccer with John Cleese

John Cleese and Tom Konkle in a comic look at soccer. Best part is the explanation of why Soccer is better than American Football.

#8 - The Miracle Match

Admittedly not the best acted movie. I put it on the list simply because it tells the true story of the 1950 US soccer team who, against all odds, beat England 1 - 0.

Possibly the biggest soccer upset ever and a vital piece of the American soccer puzzle.

#9 - The Football Factory

Another hooligan film but, The Football Factory is a more personal look into how Anglo Saxon males fed up with being told they're not good enough and using thier fists as a drug they describe as being more potent than sex and drugs put together.

#10 - Bend It Like Beckham (Widescreen Edition)

Anything with the name Beckham attached to it is sure to get recognition throughout the world of soccer. More than the title though, this movie explores the topics of women playing soccer in a male dominant society, cultural clashes, generational clashes, and the important idea of what it takes to achieve a goal agianst adversity.

1-5

#1 - Victory

Seriously, what more could you ask for? Allied POWs prepare for a soccer game against the German National Team to be played in Nazi-occupied Paris. Starring Pele, Sylvester Stalone, Bobby Moore, and a list of some of the best players at the time.

Easy pick for number 1.

#2 - History of Soccer: The Beautiful Game

A must have for any true soccer/football fan. Hours of footage and a great history lesson for the young players that think Messi and Ronaldo are the best ever.

#3 - Dare to Dream: The Story of the U.S. Women's Soccer Team

This team of women single handedly reingited the passion for soccer in America. For a stretch of 4 years these women where on top of the U.S. soccer world.

Two professional leagues have been created off of the hangover affect of this team and Mia Hamm is still the most popular female athelete in the world.

#4 - The Football Factory

As much a part of English football as the players themselves, football hooligans have made the news for decades now. This is a look at why young English men join these groups and how passionate they are to support their clubs.

#5 - Once in a Lifetime - The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos

Pele and his team of All-star footballers could have been the first ever Galáctico team created. Well before Real Madrid built their Galácticos, the New York Cosmos had Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia, and whoever else they could buy.

This is the story of the rise and fall of both the New York Cosmos and the NASL.

A must see for every U.S. Soccer fan.

  1. You should also check out "The Damned United". Awesome movie about Brian Clough and Don Revie.

  2. Not sure how I forgot that one. Just watched it this summer and as a soccer coach it was really motivational.

  3. A shot At Glory is a fair flick, also.
