U.S. Women’s National Team has Dominant Performance vs. Germany

On May 22nd in Cleveland, Ohio with a 4-0 shutout of 2-time defending Women’s World Cup Champions Germany, the U.S. Women’s National team made a statement that they are once again the best team in the world.

The U.S. had 2 goals in each half and an amazing day in net from Hope Solo helped cap the shutout. Goals were scored by Heather O'Reilly, Kristine Lilly, and the always reliable Abby Wambach (2 goals) which moves her into the 3rd position on the U.S. all-time scoring leaders list. Wambach now sits behind quite possibly the best Women’s players to ever play in Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly. Don’t forget that Lilly is still playing at the highest international level at the unheard age of 37.

The German team had some hope early however they continued to be called off sides while pressing the U.S. back line. The lack of true opportunities ended up costing Germany once the U.S. women got rolling.

In goal, Hope Solo had a game reminiscent to her amazing performance in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Gold Medal game. She looked absolutely unbeatable in goal for the worlds #1 team. Any possible doubt about which women’s team is currently the world’s best and the favorite to win the 2011 Women’s World Cup to be hosted in none other than Germany, was erased in one amazing performance last Saturday.

Just one question remains, how much credit does having a professional league in the WPS benefit these players and the quality of soccer that will be played in the upcoming Women’s World Cup? I say that having the WPS in existence gives the woman more opportunities to compete against world class competition year in and year out without having to wait for international friendly’s or tournaments and therefore is an unmeasurable benefit.

You can see the U.S. Women's National Team in action during two games against Sweden in July.
