WPS Problems Start in the Boardroom, Not on the Field
The following is a guest post by Brad Smith of MySoccerImage.com
The latest announcement from the FC Gold Pride and the Washington Freedom has sent panic around the WPS. This has come on the heels of the Los Angeles Sol folding, and the mid-season St Louis Athletica debacle. The recent failings are beginning to remind people of the WUSA, and that’s not good. The WUSA, the world’s first women’s professional soccer league, blew through $100 million dollars in just 3 years of existence.
If the FC Gold Pride goes down, then the WPS effectively becomes a regional league. The LA Sol situation was a complete disaster. LA Sol was a great team located in a huge, passionate market that’s a soccer haven in Southern California. Not to mention the endorsement of AEG, one of the biggest brands in U.S. Soccer. Despite on-field success, the LA Sol lost more than $3 million in one year. Obviously something is wrong here.
So what do the FC Gold Pride, Washington Freedom, Los Angeles Sol, and the St. Louis Athletica all have in common? (Besides terrible names?)
The WPS, like the MLS, is a top-down organization. The league is heavily involved with dictating how teams will be run. Unfortunately, this is the only model the U.S. has had any success with in professional soccer.
The problem though is that they fail to recognize that the WPS is a start-up company, and should be run with a viable business model. A major part of this includes developing a strategy that will acquire new customers (passive fans), and transforming them into loyal supporters (brand evangelists).
The WPS recently announced reorganization. Here are some of the moves they made at the end of July:
The positions cut include New Media Manager, League Office Manager/Assistant to the Commissioner, in addition to jobs in marketing. The release also points to consolidation within operations and shifting some of those duties to the team level… and WPS Communication Executives.
So while the largest obstacles to WPS success are largely dependent on marketing and public relations, they decided to shed jobs in marketing and public relations. Brilliant!
Everyone’s favorite satirical blog, Fake Sigi, had this to say in regard to WPS marketing at the beginning of last season:
It’s clear that social media sites are providing low cost, but highly effective marketing channels for companies. Some of the biggest benefits include branding, lead generation, promotion, customer support, and the “viral” spreading of links, news and information. However perhaps the largest benefit is being able to listen to your customers and react or respond to them in real time.
The results show that 61 percent of MLB fans and 55 percent of NFL fans consider themselves bigger fans of the respective leagues since they started following their favorite teams on Facebook, Twitter and similar sites. In addition, more than half of MLB fans (and 43 percent of NFL fans) said they spend more time watching and following the league now than they did prior to their social-media engagement.
Marketing 101 says it’s much easier and cheaper to keep an existing customer then to acquire a new one. It’s such an important concept that they’ve coined a term to demonstrate this: the Lifetime Value of a Customer. It’s difficult to get a fan to attend 1 game. But the biggest issue is how do you keep them coming back, buying merchandise, and having them spread their enthusiasm to their network of friends and family.
Digital is not simply an “awareness” play; it’s a customer-creation play. According to our study, the overwhelming majority of consumers who actively engage with a brand (e.g., follow a brand on Twitter or enter a contest) can evolve from passive reactors to advocates almost instantaneously.
On average, 97% report increased brand awareness; 98% show increased consideration; 97% will likely purchase a product from the brand; and 96% may recommend the brand to their friends.
Engagement equals affinity.
Moreover, brands that use digital to drive awareness also drive sales: 64% of consumers report making a first purchase from a brand because of a digital experience.
In fact, according to Forrester, if you are 45 years old or younger, you spend significantly more time using the Internet than watching television. We believe that this trend signifies the rise of “digital primacy,” where consumers are turning first and foremost to digital to help them navigate, connect, and make sense of the world.
Google and Facebook are experiential brands, as are Zappos, Twitter, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Starbucks, and Nike. These companies understand that we are living in a world where consumer preference isn’t formed in reaction to a message, but through a series of experiences over time. Ultimately, it’s a dialogue of interactions that’s stunningly effective when done right.
As Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, has been known to say:
It is unacceptable to ignore this impact and the repercussions of these actions. It should be a huge red flag that the WPS reorganized and shed jobs in marketing, new media and communications when the biggest hurdles for their success are improving their customer acquisition and retention. Because it’s not just their financial position their damaging. They’re letting down the teams, players, fans, and millions of young female athletes who pray for the chance of playing professional soccer someday.

Failure by Design
The WPS has secured some of the best women’s players in the world, are bringing in top young talent and providing an entertaining game for the fans. However the teams are only as good as the WPS.The WPS, like the MLS, is a top-down organization.
Before and After
A recent article by Virginia Online Soccer News pointed out the top 3 obstacles for WPS future success:
Not surprisingly most of them pointed out the following three areas the league will need to focus on immediately:
- Increased ticket sales
- The need for major sponsorship deals
- Increased TV/Media coverage
- Increased Ticket Sales (Marketing/Advertising)
- Need for Major Sponsorship Deals (Marketing/PR)
- Increased TV/Media Coverage (Marketing/PR)
The WPS recently announced reorganization. Here are some of the moves they made at the end of July:
The positions cut include New Media Manager, League Office Manager/Assistant to the Commissioner, in addition to jobs in marketing. The release also points to consolidation within operations and shifting some of those duties to the team level… and WPS Communication Executives.

Everyone’s favorite satirical blog, Fake Sigi, had this to say in regard to WPS marketing at the beginning of last season:
I'm also going to question WPS marketing efforts right here, right now. Longtime readers know I've been unimpressed with WPS executives dismissing marketing to young girls and women. While it's not appropriate to go into a long discussion of the issues here, the collapse of the Sol only heightens the pressure on the rest of the league to get their stuff together in regard to reaching their strongest demographic. So can this be fixed? How do we improve our marketing efforts to not only acquire new customers, but also retain them and turn them into passionate supporters? In a league pouring money down the drain, are traditional TV commercials and billboards advertisements going to effectively accomplish this? I may not have all the answers, but the short answer is a resounding “No”. So how do you reach consumers directly, and spread the “good news”?
Enter Social Media
One of the most dramatic effects of the rise of the internet and worldwide broadband connection has been the acceptance of social media’s ability to connect people. Social media is a broad range of sites including blogs, YouTube, Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg Delicious and many more. On Facebook alone, there are over 500 million users that interact as friends, share information, post funny thoughts, and “Like” things on a regular basis. In February of this year, Nielson reported that people are spending an average of 7 hours per month on Facebook, more time than on Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, YouTube and Wikipedia combined.
Survey Says: Social-media use builds fan avidity
Another recent study measured the impact of fans social media sites interacting with their favorite sports teams.

But the biggest issue is how do you keep them coming back, buying merchandise, and having them spread their enthusiasm to their network of friends and family.
The Proof is in the Pudding
One leading innovative marketing company, Razorfish, released a report in 2009 reporting on how digital social interaction affects companies. Here are some relevant excerpts from that report.Digital is not simply an “awareness” play; it’s a customer-creation play.

Your brand is formed primarily, not by what your company says about itself, but what the company does.Experience, as we will see, not only matters—it drives results to the bottom line.
The Bottom Line
Today in 2010, the most effective (and cost-efficient) ways to directly reach consumers and spread information is through social media. Using these methods effectively, any company (or professional soccer league) can increase customer acquisition, but more importantly develop relationships (bonds) between existing fans. This social media phenomenon turns passive spectators into interactive partners. Following your favorite sports team on Twitter or Liking them on Facebook creates a new bond and gives you a vested interest in the success of that brand. It is unacceptable to ignore this impact and the repercussions of these actions. It should be a huge red flag that the WPS reorganized and shed jobs in marketing, new media and communications when the biggest hurdles for their success are improving their customer acquisition and retention. Demand Support for Women's Soccer
As many women's soccer fans have heard, two WPS franchises are in danger of having to cease opperations if new ownership or investors can not be found. Unless you are a wealthy business person you may feel you have few ways to help.
Your right, but there are currently two groups attempting to raise awareness of the need for major support for Women's Soccer.

BREAKING NEWS! Washington Freedom to Cease Opperations
The website: equalizersoccer.com is reporting that two more WPS franchises have folded. The Washington Freedom as well as defending champion FC Gold Pride.
Sadley for the WPS for the second season in a row the defending champion team will not be around to defend their title.
http://vasoccernews.blogspot.com/2010/09/top-3-obstacles-for-wps-success.html
I may have seen this coming from FC Gold Pride due to their geographic location on the west coast when all other WPS teams are aligned more closely to the east coast but the Washington Freedom folding is somewhat of a surprise.
I just recently spoke with Freedom GM Mark Washo for the story regarding their top offseason priorities and other than the fact that the current owners where looking to sell their ownership there was no indication given that the team was in perril. In fact they had just resigned star forward Abby Wambach.
http://vasoccernews.blogspot.com/2010/09/top-3-obstacles-for-wps-success.html
Is this the last hope for the WPS? And what where the owners of the newest expansion franchise in Western New York thinking when they decided to join the league.
*UPDATE - Nov. 2, The Washington Freedom released an official response: http://vasoccernews.blogspot.com/2010/11/message-from-freedom.html

Top 3 Obstacles for WPS Success?
Top 3 Obstacles for WPS Success
On September 26, 2010 FC Gold Pride will host the WPS Championship game and the second WPS Champion will be crowned. For the second year in a row the best women’s soccer player in the world will be playing in the leagues championship game which will be shown live on Fox Sports Net.
For the WPS to have the sports best player and championship game broadcast live on television should indicate the Women’s league is on stable ground and poised to remain in existence. However following the 2009 season making the WPS championship game, being in the country’s second largest media market, and having Marta on their roster was not enough to keep the Los Angeles Sol from ceasing operations. Ending in nearly identical fashion for its second season, WPS will again showcase Marta on television battling for the championship on a team based in California. With average per game attendance figures continuing to fall from 2009 to 2010 and having one of its teams (St. Louis Atletica) cease operations mid-season the focus is on how or if the league will survive.
The predecessor to the WPS, WUSA, completed just three full seasons before closing down shop. Even with the star power of the still popular Mia Hamm and her 1999 World Cup teammates the WUSA was unable to find the resources needed to be a profitable sports league in America.
Along with having much lower ticket sales than the WUSA, the WPS is facing three of the same demons that eventually forced the previous league out of the business of professional soccer in America. Other than PUMA the WPS faces a lack of major corporate sponsorships along with a lack of much needed television and media coverage. Combine the lack of much needed revenue from lowering ticket sales and sponsors and you can see how as a business the WPS may be in dire straits.
Already on the outside looking in, soccer in America is simply not as popular among professional sports as the ‘top three’ Football, Basketball, and Baseball. Although the participation numbers in youth soccer are near the top of any sport it has yet to translate to the numbers necessary to maintain a professional sports league. Major League Soccer has battled for recognition and respect as a league both in America and within the international soccer world. Even after 14 years in existence MLS struggles for its share of the professional sports market behind not just the three major sports but the NHL as well.
The obstacles are easily recognizable by all those involved in the WPS from the management level (GM’s) to the players on the field. I recently asked players, GM’s, and WPS employees past and present for the top 3 obstacles the WPS will need to overcome to become a financially profitable business and successful profession sports league. Not surprisingly most of them pointed out the following three areas the league will need to focus on immediately:
- Increased ticket sales
- The need for major sponsorship deals
- Increased TV/Media coverage

The Emma Hayes Effect? Washington Freedom's Amazing Turnaround
The Washington Freedom has found a new focus and have gone from 10 straight win less games to 5 games without a loss and battling for the 4th and final playoff spot.
At home on August 28 versus Sky Blue FC the Freedom came away with a very important 2-1 win in a battle for the final playoff spot as the WPS season winds down.
So, can we assume Emma Hayes the missing link?
In response to the question: "Was Emma Hayes the missing link for the Washington Freedom?" Hayes said:
After watching the USMNT vs. Brazil game a few weeks back, I can appreciate her using the Brazilian style of play as an influence. It works for Marta, Cristian, and the other Brazilian women so maybe it has changed the style of play on the field with the Freedom over the last five games. Hopefully Hayes has brought enough to the staff to help the team keep their spot in the top four WPS playoff teams.
Whether or not Emma Hayes is directly responsible for the Freedom's turnaround, there is no denying we have seen an entirely new team over the last month during this amazing push towards the playoffs.

It's nice to feel useful and helping the team get organized but Jim [Gabarra] and the girls deserve all the credit. Spirit and character is what they have in abundance. The Washington Freedom added former Chicago Red Stars head coach Emma Hayes to the coaching staff as a "soccer consultant" following a ten game win less streak earlier this season. To learn about her coaching philosophy and influence check out these videos:

WPS and PUMA team up for Project Pink
Like many people out there, my wife and I participate in the annual AVON Walk for breast cancer. And like many people, we do so because a member of our family has been affected by breast cancer.
Well, this season Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) and PUMA (the main sponsor for WPS) have teamed up to join the battle against breast cancer. Since I believe so strongly in finding a cure for this disease and since I obviously love soccer what better way to join the fight myself than by promoting the Project Pink initiative run by PUMA.
How are PUMA and WPS using Project Pink to help in the fight against breast cancer? Good question, supporters of breast cancer charities with nonprofit status can log on at wps.pumafootball.com/projectpink to nominate the groups closest to their hearts, and, come September, we'll open the site for voting. The charity with the most votes at the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October will ultimately receive a donation consisting of 100% of the profits from the sale of PUMA Project Pink merchandise.
If you can't wait for then to get your very own Project Pink gear and want to help support the cause you can shop online here: Shop PUMA Project Pink Gear. You can also support Project Pink on Twitter by using the #projectpink hash tag -- PUMA will donate an additional $1 per Tweet per user per day, up to $25K!

Official Announcement from Washington Freedom
My innitial response is Emma Hayes is receiving on-the-job training as an insurance policy. If the Freedom bounce back, coach Gabarra keeps his position for the start of the 2011 season. However, should the team stumble and not make the playoffs I predict Gabarra is out and Hayes takes his position after final game.
With regards to Assistant Coach Clyde Watson, i'll venture to guess he is a casualty meant to show the fans that changes have been made. The move seems to be smokescreen and not really full of any substance. Did Watson resign or was it suggested to him in return for his continued role wihin the youth system?
More to come for sure. Also, will there be any player moves. Coaching aside the Freedom still need help on the field in pretty much every position. Abby could use help up top, the midfield needs to be solidified and the acquisition of defender Anita Asante may or may not fill the holes in the back line.
This is most likely the most important six game stretch in Washington Freedom history.

What WPS Means to Me: An Essay by Helen (WINNING WRITING CONTEST SUBMISSION)
Congratulations to Helen for her winning submission to the VaSoccerNews writing contest titled 'What the WPS measn to Me'.
An Essay by Helen:
To me, women’s soccer is an inspiration; a dream, showing the world what women can do for us. It shows that women can be role models; teaching young girls what they can do; how they can improve soccer, sports, how women are treated! It is an enormous effort that women are making for the future; trying to show that they are equal to men. It shows me how much women want to be respected as much as men; told that they can achieve just as much. It shows people how much the world can improve; to make women’s sports just as great as men’s.
I think that women can help the world. I believe that soccer is changing the world and women are helping. Girls are disappointed to see so many empty seats at women’s soccer games and they want to grow up to fix that. If we keep trying, women’s soccer could be as famous as men’s. Women could be more respected in sports; not everything would be about men. Every little girl could have the same chance at becoming famous as every little boy. Someday, if the world can keep improving; everyone, no matter race nor gender, can have the same chance at becoming a professional soccer player.
I play travel soccer and our coaches are always trying to tell us how we can become professional if we practice. For some girls, it would be more of an inspiration to be told this if women’s soccer was more celebrated. To me, being told of this just comes to show how we need more people to care about women’s soccer if it is ever going to become something great. It shows how much women’s soccer needs us.
I love women’s soccer and believe that someday it will become just as good as men’s. But right now, that day, is only a dream.
