Brad Guzan, USMNT get point with 0-0 draw in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (March 26, 2013) - For just the second time in U.S. Men's National Team's World Cup Qualifying history, the USA earned a point at Estadio Azteca with a 0-0 draw against Mexico in front of a massive crowd. 

Goalkeeper Brad Guzan made three saves to record his second-straight clean sheet, and the young center back duo of Omar Gonzalez and Matt Besler showed tremendous poise and grit in helping the USA earn a historic result. The only other World Cup Qualifying point earned by the USA in Azteca came during another scoreless draw on Nov. 2, 1997.


The draw in the USA's third of 10 matches in the Final Round of 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying moved the Americans to 1-1-1 (4 points) in the Hexagonal and into a three-way tie for second place with Honduras and Costa Rica behind Panama (1-0-2, 5 points) at the top of the table. Mexico (0-0-3, 3 points) is in fifth place, and Jamaica (0-1-2, 2 points) sits in sixth. The top three finishers qualify directly to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

USA-Mexico Set to battle at Azteca

The U.S. Men are winless when playing Mexico at Stadium Azteca (0-8-1) and Mexico is fresh off a Gold Medal win at the 2012 London Olympics. No need to create drama in this latest so called "friendly" between two sides that rarely if ever play a match under that matches that definition. The Americans will also be missing some regular roster members due to the schedule of the game in Mexico conflicting with the start of many international leagues.

On taking stock of the atmosphere provided by Estadio Azteca:
"We're all aware of that. It's part and parcel of this fixture and it's something we get excited for. It's going to be a crazy environment. It's one of the biggest games for us and we use that as our own personal motivation. If we get a win here, it's a big deal for us and that's what we're all looking to do on Wednesday night."

On what it would mean to beat Mexico on Wednesday:
"It would be amazing if I could be a part of that. Just being around the guys again is great for me. To beat them and being the first team to ever do it would be pretty special. Hopefully we can do that Wednesday and get a good result."

On the gap between the success of Mexico and the U.S.:
"It depends who you ask. I think ourselves and Mexico are always very close. Depending on six months or one year, either team can go ahead. Because both teams are so talented, it doesn't take much to shift the balance. That's why we play these games and it's important to not only win the head-to-head competition but also when it comes to qualifying to finish first because they're going to want to finish first. Those things are important to say who the best is. When you have two great teams, everyone is going to have an opinion on who is better."
